What To Consider When Buying A High Chair

  • Look for a chair that complies with one or more of the worldwide safety standards (see Hong Kong’s highchair safety standards here)
  • Check for stability, any flaws and cracks etc. before buying or if purchased online (especially second-hand) and before placing your child on it.
  • Look for a reliable and safe harness. The five-point harness is better for younger babies as it ensures kids can’t stand or fall off of the chair.
  • Consider what features are important to you and what type of chair you want. Do you want a tray? Do you want one that will grow with your child? Or perhaps something more portable, smaller or the easiest to clean?

The Benefits Of Having A Baby Carrier

With all the baby gear that you’re stockpiling for your bump or growing baby, it’s understandable to second guess if you should bother getting some things at all. That said, there are several key items that will quickly become your go-to must-haves, and we’re 99.9% sure that your baby carrier will become your new best friend.

There are many benefits of having a baby carrier:

  • Baby carriers can soothe baby and can help to stop tears
  • A baby carrier promotes good health (especially for premature babies and newborns)
  • It can help with cognitive learning
  • They’re great for emotional development and parent-baby bonding
  • Wearing a baby carrier can help to reduce postpartum depression (even if not strictly skin-to-skin contact)
  • Baby carriers make it a lot easier for you and bubs to move around
  • People will touch your baby less when out and about

While baby carriers are a personal choice, many parents have multiple options to take them through a baby’s different stages. Some may prefer not to use carriers in the early months, while others swear by slings and wraps that are easy to nurse in. In the initial months, a baby should be carried in front, facing inwards while they can face outwards once they can sit comfortably. Side and back carrying is possible with toddlers.

Just keep in mind baby carrier safety guidelines when choosing a carrier to fit you and your little one. When it comes to newborns and very young babies, it’s always best to think T.I.C.K.S.:

  • Tight: The sling should be tight with your baby positioned high and upright with head support. Loose fabric may cause your baby to slump down, restricting breathing. Just resist over-tightening the carrier across their back.
  • In view at all times: You should always be able to see your baby’s face, with their nose and mouth unobstructed by the sling and/or your body.
  • Close enough to kiss: Make sure that by tipping your head forward you can easily kiss the tip of your bub’s head.
  • Keep chin off the chest: Baby’s chin must be up and away from its body. Never let the baby curl with the chin down as this can restrict breathing. There should be a gap of about two fingers wide under their chin.
  • Supported back: It should be tight enough that there’s no gap between your baby and your body, but loose enough to slide your hand into the carrier.

Sleep Coach Sleep Consultants Night Nurse Hong Kong Baby Sleep

To Sleep Train A Baby Or Not To Sleep Train?

Sleep training might not be for everybody. Some recommendations state that you shouldn’t sleep train a baby under six months old as it takes anywhere from three to six months to establish their natural circadian rhythm. Caregivers should also explore if there is an underlying issue that needs to be addressed (such as colic or reflux).

Though, in the baby world of sleep, what we might consider a “problem” might actually be quite normal as babies’ sleep cycles are different to ours. Adult sleep cycles range anywhere from 90 to 120 minutes, while for babies, these can last around 50 minutes. The Sleep Foundation points out that children should be sleeping soundly through the night in cycles of 90 to 100 minutes by the time they reach school age. So we only have to worry about the lack of Zs for the first four years of their life? Easy! (Sorry, did we say “easy”? We meant “erm…nope”.)

Sleep Coach Sleep Consultants Night Nurse Hong Kong Baby Sleep

The question might also arise as to whether or not “training” a baby to sleep is the right way to go, though try saying this to an extremely sleep-deprived parent and you might end up wearing their coffee! But things are changing in the baby sleep training world. The International Association Of Child Sleep Consultants (IACSC), for example, has made it their mission to regulate sleep coach qualifications by setting high standards towards training and certification, complete with a code of ethics.

Sleep Coaches, Consultants And Night Nurses In Hong Kong

When all is said and done, not only does your little one feel out-of-sorts if they’re not well-rested, but the lack of sleep can have a huge impact on parents as well. The short fuse created by being so sleepy can also have an impact on your relationship with your partner and friends. So, if enough is enough for you, a sleep consultant or night nurse may be your knight in shining armour!

Other Child And Baby Sleep Solutions

It’s worth speaking to the hospital where you delivered as they might also be able to recommend professional help. You might also want to invest in a night light, white noise machine (or try this app!), lullaby playing soft toy (or a combination of all three!) that can help your little one to self-settle if waking through the night.

The popular Tommee Tippee Ollie The Owl Rechargeable Light and Sound Sleep Aid can automatically play 20 minutes of self-settling tunes if the sensor hears your baby crying. Or perhaps try the Skip Hop Baby Sound Machine: Moonlight & Melodies Nightlight Soother which not only has lullabies, nature sounds and a soft glowing night light, but a starry night projection as well. Good luck Mama, just never forget that you’re not alone – we’re in this together!

lactation consultant certifications lactation consultants hong kong breastfeeding hong kong

What You Need To Know About Lactation Consultant Certifications

The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) is an international organisation of specialists in breastfeeding and lactation. It’s the only body able to provide an officially recognised certification for lactation consultants (IBCLC). There are many lactation consultants in Hong Kong who hold this certification, though it isn’t a requirement and you don’t need this qualification to practise in Hong Kong.

Another certification that holds weight across the world is that of a La Leche League (LLL) Leader. Leaders have been accredited by La Leche League International to offer mother-to-mother support for breastfeeding (see below for more information).
