Surf’s up, Sassy Mamas! You may not think of Hong Kong as great place for water sports for kids, but you’d be surprised. From snorkelling on Sharp Island to wakeboarding to indoor surfing in Water World, Hong Kong has a whole host of options of water activities for the whole family to enjoy…

When water is your landing ground, it’s the perfect excuse to go all out! Of course, safety precautions still need to be taken (especially when it comes to the safety of your little ones) so we’ve rounded up some Sassy Mama approved water sports that really allow you to have a splashin’ good time. Plus, plenty of these classes offer family-friendly options, so you know your little water baby will be in good hands!

Snorkelling And Scuba Diving In Hong Kong

Hong Kong may not have the cleanest waters, but you’d be surprised at the marine life you can spot out in Clearwater Bay (the hint’s in the name). It’s also a great base location to learn how to scuba dive at your own pace before you plan a diving holiday in Asia. We recommend getting a scuba diving certification (beginner and technical diving options below) here in Hong Kong and starting here before heading out overseas. For some shallow water snorkelling, look at the waters surrounding Sharp Island, just a short ferry trip from Sai Kung.

Wakeboarding has massively increased in popularity in the last few years, so why not make your way out into the water for an experience like no other? If only one board and a rope sounds intimidating, opt for water skiing instead, or try wakesurfing and hoverboard lessons for the adrenaline junkies in the family! Plenty of junk boat packages in Hong Kong come with wakeboarding for an additional cost, but that’s added fun in the sea!

Kayaking In Hong Kong

For a more laid-back option, why not try kayaking or canoeing? It’s a great way to get in a quick upper body workout and one of the best ways to enjoy the serene Hong Kong waters (don’t expect any white-water rapids action here!). The best spots are in Sai Kung and you can usually find kayak rentals at sports centres and beaches. Kayaking is great for your growing little ones if they are looking for a bit of a challenge. Best to save this one for when they are over the age of 8, or over the age of constant complaining (please, please say there’s an age for that!).

Surfing In Hong Kong

For our experienced surfers who need no introduction to this beautiful sport, Big Wave Beach is the spot to go. For those new to the sport, never fear! There are classes offered to kiddos as young as 4 and for their mamas and papas! Warning: weekends draw in big crowds so be prepared! If your little one is really invested, consider a surfing camp, or even a private party for a unique birthday.

Kiteboarding In Hong Kong

Though not quite a kiddie-appropriate activity, this is for all the thrill-seeking teens, mamas and papas out there! If wakeboarding had a sibling, it would be kiteboarding. While the two are very similar, kiteboarding depends much more on the right wind conditions, which makes the sport even more interesting in our opinion. So if you fancy pairing your water-ready-teenager with a day of perfect wind conditions, check this out!

Sailing In Hong Kong

Does your child enjoy a strong wind and sea spray? Sailing is just the sport for young explorers and pirates alike. Send your little one for lessons from the age of 7 to become acquainted with the basics and safety measures for sailing on specially designed dinghies. This is obviously a lower intensity activity than the others, but it’s never too soon to get comfortable with the seas, and your kids will pick up transferable skills and disciplines as a seasoned sailor.

Kai Tak Promenade Playground – Space-themed park

Did someone say rocket ship? The Southern waterfront of The Hong Kong Children’s Hospital in Kai Tak is home to family-friendly facilities including a large lawn area, a children’s outdoor playground featuring aviation-themed play areas, benches and rest areas. There’s even a baby care room nearby.

Hoi Fan Road Park – Olympic-themed playground in Kowloon

With the Paris Olympics just around the corner, this huge park (9,500 square metres) has opened paying homage to the games and incorporating various elements of the Olympics. There’s an inclusive children’s playground with diversified equipment, as well as a jogging tracks and viewing platform so you can watch your budding athlete play to their heart’s content!

Cha Kwo Ling Promenade, Kwun Tong – Pet-friendly park by the sea

We’re big fans of seaside playgrounds and the one at Cha Kwo Ling Promenade is no exception! Bring the kids to the pavilions, play areas, climbing equipment and swings or watch them frolic around giant open spaces. You can even bring your pooch along and head to the pet park!

Sham Shui Po Park – Longest outdoor slide on the island?

This 6,400 square metre children’s outdoor playground boasts three large nature-themed play zones and (apparently) the longest slide in Hong Kong. Kids will love the “Sandy Bunker” zone featuring climbing towers, a sand pit and a spiral tube slide, the “Jungle Meadow” zone with swings, flower bells and petal drums and the “Oasis Spring” zone with a splash sensory wall, octopus fountain and trampolines.

MOKO Children’s Playground – Large outdoor park in Mong Kok

Located on the fourth floor at MOKO, this children’s playground was the talk of the town when it first opened in 2021! It covers an area of 18,000 feet. It has a climbing wall that is 8 metres off the ground, bird-themed play equipment with slides, rope climbers, swings and more. What makes it even better is that it’s right next to the food court where you can take the kids after playtime!

Tsuen Wan Plaza Play Area – Toddler-friendly outdoor park

With a colourful rainbow theme, this outdoor playground has an eight-metre-tall tower with three slides, perfect for kids who love adventure (and are not afraid of heights!). It also has a climbing castle, a spinning rope to climb on and mini hills with ropes and slides. For the little tots, there are bouncy clouds, musical tubes and baby swings.

Shung Ling Street Playground, Wong Tai Sin – Green park that inspires creativity

Incorporating its green surroundings into the design, this playground features a nest swing, a carousel, a climbing play house and ball-shaped balancing play facilities. Another hidden gem is this dinosaur-themed outdoor playground tucked away in Choi Hung. It makes for a great day out for the kids, as they explore caves and discover all things dinosaurs. The playground also has a 7-a-side soccer pitch, tennis courts and table tennis facilities.

Kowloon Tsai Park – Outdoor playground suitable for all ages

Home to a beautiful Bauhinia garden with around 120 bauhinia trees, Kowloon Tsai Park is located near Kowloon Tong Station Exit E. There are soccer pitches, a roller skating rink, a jogging track, a children’s playground, plus a dog garden for your furry friends.

Kowloon Park, Tsim Sha Tsui – Playground for bird-lovers (adults and kids!)

Just like Hong Kong Park on the other side of the harbour, Kowloon Park has a beautiful lake and plays host to 18 different species of birds (including some rather fabulous flamingos). Facilities include football pitches, extensive gardens, an ornamental maze and a playground. Also on site is Kowloon Park’s huge aquatic centre with several indoor and outdoor pools and Kowloon Park Sports Centre, with sports halls and courts galore. Jordan Valley Park, Kwun Tong – Outdoor fun for the whole family

If you’re looking for a full day out with the family, we highly recommend Jordan Valley Park! It’s huge, it has two model car racetracks, a maze garden, a greenhouse, a children’s play area and sprawling lawns for family picnics – what’s not to love?

Wan Chai Promenade Playground – Tunnel through greenery in Wan Chai

The Wan Chai Promenade starts near Tamar Park in Admiralty and has children’s play areas with colourful tunnels, decorative lights, swings, slides and more. For some extra family fun, there are two-seater and four-seater ducky pedal boats, though you’ll have to book online in advance.

King’s Road Playground – Bounce and swing at North Point’s outdoor park

This outdoor playground is a nice one to stop by if you happen to be in North Point. While it doesn’t have a lot of play equipment, the kids will still love to run around its colourful safety mats and enjoy the slide, trampoline and swings.

If the spectacular view, vintage tram ride, yummy food and stunning Sky Terrace up at Victoria Peak aren’t enough to keep the little ones amused, then the Mount Austin Playground is bound to. With swings, slides, tunnels and bars, this classic play area is also one of the greener areas in Hong Kong where you can easily set up a picnic and enjoy a nice lunch with the kids.

Close to the fabulous Kennedy Town swimming pool, this park has a children’s playground, a grassy area, a fitness arena and a jogging path. If you’re in the area, head across Shing Sai Road to the Belcher Bay promenade where children’s play areas are often set up complete with slides, swings, monkey bars as well as shaded picnic tables.

Created by a Hong Kong-based arts social enterprise, the seating at this outdoor playground was made using upcycled disposed timber. “Fung Cheung” translates to “Soaring Pheonix” in English, so you’ll find lots of bird-themed features here including a nest swing, play tower, climbing facilities, playhouse and more.

There’s more than enough to keep the kids engaged and happy at Tuen Mun Park in the New Territories. We love that it has inclusive play facilities for children of different ages and abilities. It also has a reptile house for budding herpetologists, a model boat pool, a conservation corner and much more!

Hung Leng Children’s Playground, Fanling – Farm-themed outdoor park

Hung Leng Children’s Playground takes inspiration from the history of its location as a farming village, adopting the “Play In Farmland” theme in its design. There are tunnels, monkey bars and net swings for the young ones and fitness equipment suitable for all ages.

Metroplaza Fun Park – Vegetable-centric playground in Kwai Chung

Can’t figure out a way to make veggies fun for kids? A trip to Fun Park at Metroplaza might do the trick! This children’s outdoor playground has play facilities in the shape of colourful giant vegetables. There’s a 3.5-metre tall turbo tube slide, adult-toddler swings and an outdoor garden filled with seasonal flowers.

Tai Po Waterfront Park – Scenic park with multiple outdoor facilities

At 22 hectares, Tai Po Waterfront Park is one of the biggest parks in the city. There are playgrounds, a gateball court, a bowling green and a large model boating lake. Kids will love the creepy crawlies at the Insect House, but the best part of the park may be the 1.2km long promenade, which takes advantage of the lovely setting and provides a nice level space for cycling or enjoying a relaxing stroll.

Kwong Fuk Park, Tai Po – Outdoor playground for little ones

If you’re in Tai Po, you could also check out the slightly lesser-known Kwong Fuk Park. It has a colourful playground that includes climbing facilities, play panels, slides and rocking chairs that your kiddo will love.

Po Hong Park, Tseung Kwan O – Huge park with several play areas for all ages

Possibly the biggest collection of playground equipment in Hong Kong, Po Hong Park guarantees hours of fun and entertainment. There are eight children’s play areas, including smaller equipment for toddlers, more challenging climbing structures for older kids, a soccer court, a basketball and volleyball court, and a roller skating rink.

The Best Beach Playgrounds In Hong Kong

When you’re spending a day at the beach (don’t forget your swimming cossie and sunscreen!), the sprawling sands are usually enough to keep the children occupied. Of course, having a playground close at hand means you could stretch your day out at the seaside that little bit further! A number of our favourite Hong Kong Island and New Territories beaches have small outdoor playgrounds for kids.

Pet-Friendly Parks In Hong Kong

If you have been struggling to find places to take your fur baby, some of the parks listed above are known to be dog-friendly and you can also find a complete list of pet-friendly parks and gardens here. Within the city, these spots are often quite small but serve the purpose if you want to have your kids throw a ball for your playful pups. Other places we love include the West Kowloon Waterfront Park, Penfold Park, Discovery Bay and Stanley Plaza, where there are enough activities and more than enough space for the whole family to enjoy.

Top Outdoor Activities For Teens In Hong Kong

Beaches

If your teen is looking to enjoy a day out in the sun, Hong Kong has a wealth of beautiful beaches that are only a short hop on public transport away, if you’re not already lucky enough to have one within walking distance! Those seeking a little more privacy on a smaller, more remote beach might prefer a junk boat trip. Most will even do catering packages, so grab your friends and their kids (or your teenager’s friends) and prepare for a little getaway. Just be sure to bring sunscreen and don a swimsuit if you plan to get your feet a little wet!

Hikes

Hong Kong may be best known for its skyscrapers and closely packed buildings, but there’s also plenty of nature to explore in this concrete jungle. The city has several great hiking paths, with something for everyone, whether you’re an amateur who prefers flat ground or a professional who loves high altitudes. There’s no better way to get some exercise than up on a hill, taking in amazing views of the city from up high (not to mention all the Insta-worthy shots!).

Public Libraries

With 70 static locations and 12 mobile ones, a public library can be just the place for some quiet alone time for your teens. Our favourite is the Central Library in Causeway Bay, with a wealth of facilities and the largest collection of books. If they want to take something home at the end of the day, getting a library card is as easy as filling in a form – you can even register your HKID as a library card.

Sassy Mama Tip: To avoid fines, renew your book loan or even request for a book to be transported to the closest library to you, get the public libraries app on your phone. Simply log in and you’ll be sent reminders to renew or return your books – so no more marking calendars.

Swimming Pools In Hong Kong

This is another family favourite! Beat the heat by spending a day poolside or showing off your cannonball. Hong Kong has lots of public pools and hotel pools around the city with options for any budget.

Picnics In The Park

The Hong Kong government has invested a good amount of money in creating these welcome breaks from our towering buildings, making it a great place to go for teens to hang out with their friends this summer. Make a day of it by bringing a hamper and a picnic blanket, and people-watch and play card games to your heart’s content.

The Top Public Swimming Pools In Hong Kong For Kids And Families

With plenty of affordable public swimming pools in Hong Kong to choose from, there’s no reason not to grab your kids and dive in! Why not try out a nearby swimming pool or make a trip to enjoy the variety of public pools with water slides, fountains, splash buckets and more.

The best way to cool off this summer is to jump into some of the fabulous public swimming pools in Hong Kong. We are spoiled for choice with 44 public swimming pools in all corners of Hong Kong, so chances are, there’s one not too far away. Admission price to the LCSD pools is fixed no matter where you go, $17 for adults on weekdays and $19 on weekends and public holidays. For children (aged 3 to 13 years) and seniors, it’s $8 on weekdays and $9 on weekends and public holidays. Toddlers under 3 years get in free!

Sassy Mama Tips:

Water-loving families can look into monthly passes, which are $300 per adult and $150 per child, full-time student, disabled person (and their minder) or senior. Click here for more information on prices.
We’ve been caught out promising the kids water slides only to find the kids’ swimming pools shut. It’s a good idea to call ahead to check if the facilities you want to use are open. Phone numbers for each pool are included in the listings below.

Kennedy Town Swimming Pool

Conveniently located and easy to get to from Central, the Kennedy Town Swimming Pool is always a favourite with kids! There are two indoor pools, a Jacuzzi and two outdoor swimming pools – one for the kids with water slides, colourful plastic animals and the works, and the other for mamas, papas and big kids! It’s right opposite Belcher’s Bay Park, so if your kids haven’t expended all their energy swimming, you can always hop across to the outdoor playground for some more playtime, while you get your daily run.

Hong Kong Island’s biggest public swimming pool complex in Causeway Bay is the place to go if you have a kid who loves to dive, as the deep end is an impressive 5m (whoa!). There is even a dedicated diving pool and while you have to be in a class to use the big boards, anyone can bounce off the 1m springboard. It’s the perfect swimming pool to visit if you’re planning to stay out for the entire day as it’s close to the Central Public Library, plenty of restaurants and of course, there’s an abundance of playgrounds in the park itself.

Jordan Valley is a fab little-kid-friendly swimming pool in Hong Kong, ideal for preschoolers, kindergarteners and little swimmers under 10 years old. In addition to a pool for laps only, you’ll find an area with lots of fun stuff for the kids – water slides (including baby slides…yay!), water-squirting dolphins and sharks, floating mini aquatic animals to sit on, a water fountain to dance under and lots more.

There is no better way to escape the daily routine and provide a safe space for little ones to talk about school, hobbies or play catch than picnics in Hong Kong (plus, it gets them away from their devices!). Clearwater Bay Country Park – Picnic in Hong Kong with a kid-friendly hiking trail

A bit out of the way but well worth the trip, Clearwater Bay Country Park is the ideal spot to set up your picnic mat against the backdrop of lush mountain ranges on one side and emerald waters on the other. Most of the walkways are stroller friendly and there are barbecue areas alongside an easy, family-friendly hiking trail that the kids will love to explore.

How to get there: Hop on Hong Kong green minibus 16 or a quick taxi ride from Hang Hau MTR Station.

West Kowloon Art Park – Picnics for foodie families in Hong Kong

For families that love foodie picnics, West Kowloon Art Park has plenty of restaurants and cafes and heaps of food trucks offering burgers, pineapple buns, ice cream and slushies. You can also rent adult and junior bikes for $30 per hour or a family bike for $120 per hour. There is an off-leash pet zone where your doggo will enjoy playing around freely!

How to get there: Take buses 952, 962X or E11B from the HSBC Main Building on Queen’s Road Central to Western Harbour Crossing Toll Plaza. Head northeast and walk along the water until you reach the park entrance.

Opening Hours: 6am to 11pm daily

Tai Po Waterfront Park – Picnic near model boats and insect house

Tai Po Waterfront Park is a great spot for picnics as it has a model boat pool and a landscaped lawn where you can set up your picnic mat and watch large kites fly above your head! Walk up the stroller-friendly lookout tower that spirals up to the skies for a stunning view of the Tolo harbour or head to the Insect House for some fun with the creepy crawlers.

How to get there: Take the East Rail Line to Tai Po Market Station, take exit B and take bus 26 to the Oriental Press Centre bus stop. Walk along Dai Shing Street until you find the park entrance.

Opening Hours: Open 24 hours daily, the insect hours are open from 8am to 7pm and the spiral lookout tower is open from 7am to 7pm daily.

Inspiration Lake – Picnic near Disneyland Hong Kong with pedal boats and quad bikes

Located right next to Disneyland, the grassy park next to Inspiration Lake is the perfect place for family picnics in Hong Kong. Walk along the 1500m paved trail with tranquil views of the water and scenic mountains or rent pedal boats or quad bikes for the entire family. Little ones will adore jumping around the splash pad in the children’s playground.

Sassy Mama Tip: To get the best spot, arrive early on weekends as it tends to get busy later in the day and pack enough food so you can kick back and relax the whole day!

How to get there: Board the Disneyland Resort line at Sunny Bay Station to Disneyland Resort and follow the signs to Inspiration Lake.

Cyberport Waterfront Park – Pup-friendly picnic in Hong Kong

A dog-friendly destination for picnics, your kids and fur babies will have hours of fun at Cyberport Waterfront Park. A massive six hectare wide grassy area, Jordan Valley Park is one of our absolute fave spots for picnics in Hong Kong! Saunter in the bougainvillaea gardens, find your way out of a maze garden with the littles or simply watch them frolic in the playground. There are two radio-controlled circuits for parents and kiddos who love model car racing.

How to get there: Take the MTR to Tsim Sha Tsui Station and take KMB bus 26 from Shun Tun Bus Terminus on Haiphong Road to Shun Lee Fire Station.

Opening Hours: Jordan Valley Park is open from 5am to 11pm daily, while the radio-controlled model car circuit is open from 9am to 10:30pm daily.

Tamar Park – Vast landscape for children to play and enjoy city picnics

When the littles want to run around and all you want is to bask in the sun, Tamar Park is the ideal spot for picnics. There is limited shade so bring a tent for the young ones and use plenty of sunscreen! Hop over to the iBakery Gallery Cafe for nibbles or stroll along the promenade for gorgeous views of the harbour.

How to get there: Take the MTR to Admiralty Station Exit A

Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park – Picnics for active kids in Hong Kong

Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park has plenty of greenery and a wonderful harbour view paired with a multitude of kid-friendly activities, making it ideal for picnics. Kids will love the railway-themed playground, the 7-a-side soccer pitch and basketball courts or a dip in the nearby public swimming pool.

How to get there: Take the Sheung Wan MTR to Exit D

Opening Hours: Park facilities are open 24 hours daily, except the 7-a-side soccer pitch which is open from 8am to 11pm daily. The swimming pool is open from 6:30am to 10pm with breaks from 12pm to 1pm and 5pm to 6pm.
