Hong Kong has plenty of splendid beaches. Depending on where you stay, you could take the kids to the closest beach near you or uncover some of the secret and best beaches in Hong Kong. Gather the little ones – it’s time to build sandcastles, collect sea shells and bask in some Vitamin D.
The city may be famous for its epic skyline and the hustle and bustle but it also has beaches aplenty. Most of these beaches are under government supervision and so they often have a lifeguard on duty, and changing, shower and toilet facilities — all things you need with the little ones in tow! Pack the beach toys, swimming costumes for the kids and Mama, sunglasses and sunblock and get ready to take the kids on a seaside adventure. We’ve rounded up our favourite beaches in Hong Kong.

Repulse Bay Beach – Beachside restaurants, play area, shopping and more
Repulse Bay Beach needs no introduction – it is a popular choice for weekend beachgoers. But it’s got everything you need – and vendors with things you forgot (umbrellas, sand toys, etc.). Take a break from the beach at the playground and be sure to toss a coin into the mouth of the fish statue for good luck at the Tin Hau Temple before you head home.
Sassy Mama Tip: Arrive early for a good spot on the sand and be sure to stop for lunch along The Pulse!
Facilities: Restaurants, fast-food kiosk, changing room, shower facilities, toilet, playground and beach volleyball court.
How to get to Repulse Bay Beach
From Central, take bus 6, 6X or 260 from Exchange Square to the Repulse Bay Beach bus stop. From Jardine’s Bazaar in Causeway Bay, take minibus 40 or 40X to the Repulse Bay Beach bus stop.
Leaving Repulse Bay after a day at the beach sometimes becomes difficult when the crowds thin out at the same time. If you’re calling a cab, it’s best to start trying half an hour before you need to leave.

Stanley Main Beach – Beachside BBQ available
Famous for its market, Stanley is always full of activities. We have to warn you that this beach gets very busy, so it’s not one to go to if you’re looking to avoid crowds. Be sure to wander along the boardwalk and choose from the many seafront restos, or pick up some groceries from the supermarket in Stanley Plaza and have your own beachside BBQ.

How to get to Stanley Main Beach
Take any of the buses to Stanley that leave from your part of town and look for stops like Stanley Village, Stanley Beach Road, Stanley Blake Pier, etc.

Shek O Beach – Popular beach with BBQ options
Shek O is ever popular with locals and tourists alike. Go prepared and enjoy a seaside barbecue at one of the many pits available. It’s best to arrive as early as possible, as the barbecues are available only on a first-come-first-served basis. The village has a mellow vibe so it’s great for a stroll and we can vouch for the beachside cafes serving up Thai-Chinese cuisine!

How to get to Shek O Beach
Get off at Shau Kei Wan Station exit A3 on the MTR Island Line. Then head to the Shau Kei Wan Bus Terminus and take number 9 bus to Shek O.

Chung Hom Kok Beach – Quiet beach hidden away from the crowds
Tucked away around the corner from Stanley sits Chung Hom Kok, a quaint beach that has an “urban hideaway” written all over it. Easily accessible but slightly tricky to find Chung Hom Kok is a short 3-minute walk down a leafy park directly off a quiet residential street (meaning it’s nowhere near as busy as the likes of Repulse Bay or Stanley).
Sassy Mama Tip: The beach, playground and flat ground close to the playground make for great spots for a birthday party for kids. Only make sure that you don’t forget anything as the stairs are painful when you have to lug things up and down.

How to get to Chung Hom Kok Beach
The easiest way would be to take a cab directly there! You could also take a bus from Stanley to Chung Hom Kok beach.

Turtle Cove Beach – Less explored beach with playground for kids
Located between Stanley and Tai Tam Reservoir, Turtle Cove Beach is a less populated beach, perfect to spend a lazy afternoon with the family. There is also a children’s playground nearby if the kiddos want to jump around a bit more. There is not much shade available, so you may have to carry your own umbrella.

How to get to Turtle Cove Beach
Take the MTR to Sai Wan Ho exit A (Island Line). Then take bus 14 and get off right after the Tai Tam Reservoir. Walk down the steps to the beach.

Hung Shing Yeh Beach – Fine sand beach on Lamma Island
This beach has been long adored by foreigners and locals because of its clear blue waters and powdery white sand. It’s the place to be when you want to host a beach party and barbecue up a storm, or just to relax and have a laid-back day. Hung Shing Yeh is also fully equipped with all the essentials and has very good water quality.

How to get to Hung Shing Yeh Beach
Take the ferry from Central Ferry Pier 4 to Lamma Island. From Yung Shue Wan ferry pier, it’s a 30-minute walk along the Family Trail.

Tung Wan Beach And Kwun Yam Beach – Beautiful beaches in Cheung Chau
The beaches of Cheung Chau are loved by Hong Kong families and for good reason. You can easily spend your day exploring the island, or just find your patch of sand and relax for the day. Both beaches are loved by windsurfers but are also perfect for little children! If you’re into watersports (or just want to give it a try!), the Cheung Chau Windsurfing Centre provides windsurfing, surfing and canoeing equipment.

How to get to Tung Wan Beach and Kwun Yam Beach
Take the ferry from Central Pier 5 to Cheung Chau. There, from the ferry pier, it’s a 10-min walk along Tung Wan Road to reach the beach. Kwun Yam Beach is another five minutes away.

Pui O Beach – Beach with a campsite on Lantau Island
Pui O Beach has a very relaxed, laid-back vibe and although it is popular, it never feels overwhelmingly busy. Complete with a campsite, It’s also worth noting that, although pleasant, the sand here is darker and rather sticky – so don’t visit and expect to find idyllic white sands.

How to get to Pui O Beach
Take the MTR to Tung Chung. From Exit B, take bus 3M at Tung Chung Station Bus Terminus to the Lo Uk Tsuen stop and walk across South Lantau Road.Both paths near the school lead to the beach.
You can also take a ferry from Central Pier No. 6 to Mui Wo and take buses 1, 2, 3M or 4 from the Mui Wo bus stop to the Lo Uk Tsuen bus stop.

Upper And Lower Cheung Sha Beach, Lantau Island
Located in southern Lantau, Cheung Sha Wan is one of Hong Kong’s longest beaches. Lower Cheung Sha has more restaurants and tends to be busier, so if you want to escape the crowds, head to Upper Cheung Sha Beach. Be sure to check out family-favourite restaurant, Bathers, which is open all week.

How to get to Upper and Lower Cheung Sha Beach
From the MTR Tung Chung Station Exit B, head to the bus terminus and take buses 11, 11A or 23. For Lower Cheung Sha Beach, get off at the Cheung Sha Ha Tsuen bus stop, walk a few steps ahead and take the first road left down to the beach. For Upper Cheung Sha Beach, stay on the bus for another 2 kms and get off at Upper Cheung Sha Beach bus stop.

Best Beaches In Sai Kung And Clearwater Bay in Hong Kong
Clearwater Bay First And Second Beach – Secluded and beautiful beaches
Sitting in the southeast corner of the New Territories, Clearwater Bay comprises two beaches — aptly named Clearwater Bay First Beach and Clearwater Bay Second Beach. First Beach is a little more secluded and can be quieter, though Second Beach has a small café selling refreshments, is a bit more scenic and offers more of the perks that families need.
Sassy Mama Tip: You’ll have to walk down quite a few steps to get to Clearwater Bay First and Second Beach (more steps at First Beach), so it’s not ideal for strollers. However, both beaches are connected by a newly renovated asphalt trail which is a super easy walk.

How to get to the Clearwater Bay beaches
Take the MTR to TKO and then hop onto the green minibus 103M. It terminates at Clearwater Bay Second Beach.

Trio Beach – A must-visit soft white sand beach in Sai Kung
Grab your kids and head down to this treasure trove because it’s easy to reach with little ones in tow. Trio Beach has all the essential amenities and your little kids can paddle away in the shallow water under your watchful eyes. We admit it is a trek to get to, but hey, it involves a sampan ride! Bonus: it’s also a beach that consistently is at the top of the Environmental Protection Department’s rankings of water quality.

How to get to Trio Beach
Don’t let the sampan ride deter you! It’s a 10-min boat ride from Pak Sha Wan or a 3-km hike away. If you’re hiking, get to the Lions Nature Park and follow the Che Keng Tuk Road to the end, then take the path flanked with trees – you’ll see the signs for Trio beach. If you’re taking the sampan, remember to get the sampan driver’s number and get the same boat back!

Kiu Tsui And Half Moon Bay Beach, Sharp Island – Geographical marvels at this Hong Kong beach
Sharp Island makes a lovely day out with the kids in Sai Kung. Jump on the ferry from Sai Kung Pier and hop off at your chosen beach. Kiu Tsui is the larger of the two and has a tombolo (use this as an opportunity to teach your kids geography terms!) that connects to the islet called Kiu Tau. Half Moon Bay (or Hap Mun Bay) is another great spot to explore. It’s decked out with all the essential amenities and also allows you to hike admiring the unique fauna and flora.

How to get to Kiu Tsui And Half Moon Bay Beach
Take the ferry from Sai Kung pier to Hap Mun Beach. You’ll need to do a nice and easy 2-km hike to Kiu Tsui pier to get to Sharp Island.

Best Beaches In The New Territories, Hong Kong
Ma Wan Tung Wan – Quiet beach in Tsuen Wan
Located on Ma Wan Island, Ma Wa Tung Wan is quiet and one of the least crowded swimming beaches. It is clean and scenic with beautiful, soft, white sand that you can sink your feet into. You will love the picturesque view of the iconic Hong Kong bridges. Visit the Ma Wan Park nearby and make a trip to Noah’s Ark Theme Park, which is a fun trip on its own.

How to get to Ma Wan Tung Wan beach
From Tsuen Wan, take buses N331 or N331s and look for stops Kei Wai Primary School, MA Wan (Pak Yan Road) and Park Island Ferry Pier that are all close to Ma wan Tung Wan beach.

Golden Beach – Largest public beach in Tuen Mun
If you are looking into getting away from the bustling city life for a day or two, head to Golden Beach for beautiful sunsets and plane-watching on a man-made beach paradise. This gem features lots of crabs, shells, and smooth rocks that get washed up in the mornings. Visit the many eateries nearby and walk to the Gold Coast Piazza. Best avoid peak hours because it does get busy (and how!).

It’s easy to get to from Tuen Mun MTR station. You could also take bus 962B from Admiralty.

Butterfly Beach – Campsite and BBQ area at the beach
If you’ve got li’l campers who are ready for some nature exploring, bring them to Butterfly Beach for the weekend. There are loads of facilities at the campgrounds, including a barbecue area, jogging track, soccer pitch, volleyball court, basketball court, toilets, and refreshment kiosks. The beach here is popular as there are no big waves and you can fish as well.

How to get to Butterfly Beach

Tai Po Lung Mei Beach – Man-made beach with gentle waves
If you think you’re always heading back to the same beaches, try a new scene at Tai Po. Stretching 200 metres long, the man-made stretch of sand and sea sits next to Tai Mei Tuk and the Plover Cove Reservoir. As with most beaches in Hong Kong, you’ll be surrounded by lush mountain views. The water is very gentle, making it great for kids (especially if they’re new swimmers).

How to get to Tai Po Lung Mei beach
