It was the end of July 2022 and I was very excited to pee on a stick. Even more so when the stick indicated that I was expecting my first child. By mid-August, I got the medical confirmation that I was pregnant. It was official. The cherry on top? I’m not expecting one baby, but two!

Before reading any further, bear in mind that I am grateful that I will become a mum very soon. It’s something that I wanted (and still want!) very much, but I just didn’t expect it to be this difficult.

I don’t like being pregnant.

I don’t like it and I feel a mix of guilt and shame even saying that. If you are expecting a child, and you’re not “enjoying” this gift of life as you suppose to, know that you are not alone.

Twins! What a start to this new pregnancy thing!

During my first appointment, my gynaecologist said:

“Do you see what I see?”

I saw nothing! It was all black. At that precise moment, I thought she was telling me that there was no baby at all. She continued and said: “There are 2 babies! Double congratulations!”

I was choked. WTF was going on?

Indubitably I was not expecting to have twins. It’s a natural pregnancy, and I guess we were lucky (?) to conceive two babies at the same time. In France, twin births represent about 1.5% of all births. How did we manage to do that? What were the odds? Should we play the lottery more often?

My husband was just thrilled by the news. I won’t lie — I freaked out (and I’m still terrified by the idea of handling two babies at once). I panicked and cried and it took more than a couple of hours to process the news.

When the reality doesn’t match your expectations…

For the past few years, I pictured myself having only one child. One kid was my plan. I imagined us to be a small, close-knit family of three. In less than thirty seconds, the vision of what my life would have been like collapsed and that was rough. At that moment, we went from being a couple to on our way to becoming a family of four. Or five if you include our cat.

Then came the time to make our birth announcement to friends and family. Let me tell you now, they never react the way you wish they would. 

As if I wasn’t already feeling stressed enough, the unsolicited comments were overwhelming. The most common reaction: “One baby is tiring enough, but two?”

I guess it’s only natural and they don’t mean any harm, but it really just adds to that initial anxiety.

What is happening to my body?

I am really lucky because so far, my pregnancy has been quite easy. I’ve had very few symptoms and I know that’s not the case for every woman. So I imagine what I experienced with my body was “smooth” compared to others, but that’s not to say it was uncomplicated.

Despite this, I resented my body for presenting me with that first-trimester nausea. I had stopped drinking and smoking, but I was feeling as if I was “hungover”. It was so unfair. It was like my body didn’t want to be my ally on this adventure. Reconciling my mind and body was not an easy task.

As the bump began to grow, as I knew it would, it wasn’t so easy to accept.

“Am I still attractive? Am I still good-looking?”

These might seem trivial when posed next to the prospect of creating life… Well, call me shallow, but I still care about my appearance. I wasn’t convinced by my reflection in the mirror. Luckily, my husband is very supportive. His daily reminders of my beauty are more important than I would like to admit.

As I enter my third trimester my body is not able to move as it used to. Climbing a few steps is a challenge. Walking for too long is a nightmare. I’m out of breath if I walk too fast even for a short distance. Even stretching is demanding. I can’t find a comfortable position on my sofa. If I eat too much, I feel terrible. Sometimes my belly is so stretched I don’t know how the babies will find space to grow. I dread going to sleep because of my back pain and insomnia.

A time to grieve my old life

I loved my life before I got pregnant. More than once during my pregnancy, I realised that my life had already become pretty damn boring.

During my first trimester, I was so tired that I was in bed by 9.30pm. Between that and sipping on soda water, my social life wasn’t exactly what it used to be. Plus, I had to give up my favourite sports, taking away my outlet for any frustrations.

Friday night beers and boozy weekend brunches, playing squash and hiking adventures. That lifestyle disappeared.

Not for good (I hope!) but for a while. There’s a whole new lifestyle to define.

What does the future hold?

There are unanswerable questions about my relationships. And it’s terrifying.

How is it going to be with my husband? Are we going to handle this new challenge as a team? Is our relationship strong enough to cope with a lack of sleep and crying babies?

What about my friends? Will those without kids still want to see me? Will they understand my constraints as a new parent? How will we make time for one another?

There is no doubt that the changes brought about by the arrival of twins are titanic.

The ups and downs of being pregnant as an entrepreneur

There’s never a good time to get pregnant. I also thought that it was not the right time for me. My marketing and communications business, J. Consulting, launched a year ago my efforts started to be rewarded. Even with the new clients in my portfolio, I am still a rookie.

There are some huge benefits of being pregnant as a solopreneur, especially the possibility to rest as needed or adapt my schedule around medical appointments.

On the other hand, I couldn’t ignore the disadvantages either. No maternity leave, no support and no safety net. If I decide to stop working for three months, I won’t get paid. It’s as simple as that. As a couple, we can make sort it out, but as a working woman, I want to be financially independent.

Finances aside, I don’t want to start everything again. I created my business from scratch and it breaks my heart to think that I might lose everything that I’ve built so far. It’s a lot of pressure and work to anticipate my return to work.

The final stretch

I’m in the final weeks of my pregnancy and I can’t wait to cross the finish line. This pregnancy has not been a piece of cake, but a rather long journey full of pitfalls for which I was not prepared.  I know the next steps are hard, but that’s another adventure in itself.

This month’s “The Bump” is someone very close to Team Sassy Mama. Michelle Proctor is a Hong Kong-based portrait and lifestyle photographer, who has been the women behind the camera in many of our photoshoots, showcasing amazing mums and mamas-to-be. Along with many of our previous The Bump features, Michelle has beautifully shot past That Mamas, too, such as Claire Yates and Maggie Wong. Originally hailing from Canada, she moved to Hong Kong over six years ago and has been snapping away since, boasting an impressive portfolio that covers family portraits, weddings, brands and media. But now, it’s time for Michelle to step in front of the camera and chat to us about her experience of becoming a first-time mama. We chat about how she broke the news to her loved ones, what drew her to photography, and how she’s preparing for the arrival of “little bean”.

Tell us about yourself.
I’m originally from Canada and have been living in Hong Kong for the past six years. I’ve taken the time to travel as much as possible and have worked hard developing my business. I have been fortunate enough to have amazing clients, and many have become good friends. Travelling keeps me inspired. I love new adventures, places and food. When I’m not shooting you can find me out in nature.

How did you end up in HK and what was your first impression of Hong Kong?
I had just finished university and my husband got a job offer in Hong Kong. I love the buzz of the city and the blend of Eastern and Western culture. Having access to the beaches and mountains is a great way to decompress from the city. I saw living in Hong Kong as an adventure and jumped at the opportunity.

What drew you to photography? How did you find being in front of the camera for a change?
I’ve been fascinated with imagery since I can remember. I was 14 when my parents bought me my first camera. We went to Cuba later that year and I remember loving the colours, light and vibrancy of Havana. That’s when I fell in love with photography.

To be honest I don’t really like being in front of the camera. I wish I enjoyed it more but I’m 100% happier with a camera in hand. At least that helps me empathise with people who don’t enjoy it and I can help them feel at ease when we’re shooting.

Do you know the gender of the baby? Are you keeping it a secret or doing a reveal?
We do, we’re having a boy! We thought it would be special to do a reveal with our families in Canada. It was great to share some of the baby excitement with them. We gave the envelope to a baker and had a little party. Everyone placed their bets on whether they thought it would be a boy or a girl. We cut into the cake and team blue won!

How did you break the news of your pregnancy to your friends and family?
We face-timed with our families and their reactions were so sweet. I somehow remembered to screenshot the moment I told them and I love those pictures. There were definitely happy tears.

I’ve saved all the messages from friends and loved ones and I’ve put them in a notebook. Little bean can read them later on and see how loved he was even before he was born.

My favourite reaction was Mark’s [Michelle’s husband] of course. I found out I was pregnant while he was away on a trip. I surprised him with a little gift and when he unwrapped it he found a pair of baby shoes inside.

Any books that you’ve read that you would recommend?
Pre-pregnancy, I read “What to Expect Before You’re Expecting” and found it really interesting. It was like taking biology class all over again. During pregnancy, I’ve really liked “How to Grow a Baby and Push it Out” by Clemmie Hooper. It’s everything you need to know without bogging you down with too many details. “Brain Rules for Baby” by John Medina was great to understand how baby’s and children’s brains develop.

What’s the most supportive thing your other half has done throughout your pregnancy so far?
It’s been all the little things that have added up. Whether it’s making food, being at the check-ups or carrying my bag for me. Above all, he’s so excited to meet this little one. I know he’s going to be very hands-on and they’re going to be the best of friends.

What have been your favourite moments during pregnancy and what have you struggled with?
Seeing him for the first time during the scan was amazing. The first time I felt him move was so exciting. On top of that, everyone has been extremely kind and generous. The love this little bean has gotten has been incredible.

I miss being as active as I was, but I know it’s just temporary so I try not to dwell on it.

Do you have any pregnancy style or beauty favourites?
I’ve tried to stay true to my personal style as much as I can. I don’t usually wear dresses but they’ve proven to be the most comfortable later on in pregnancy. The Align pant from Lululemon is super comfortable and fits the bump without having to size up.

Beauty-wise, I haven’t changed much either, I’ve just used some more Shea butter than usual.

Do you follow a specific fitness programme to stay in shape?
Apart from having to give up playing soccer, I was able to keep up my normal exercise routine of running and HIIT training with some modifications until a few months ago. I’ve had to take it easier because of the pain in my hips but I try to get my 10,000 steps in a day. I don’t beat myself up over exercising at this time, as long as I keep moving every day. I’ll get back to training once this little guy gets out.

Have you received any advice during your pregnancy that you think is worth sharing?
Take B12 and sleep. Someone told me to sleep as much as I can now as I’ll never sleep this peacefully again. I thought that was funny and true.

What advice would you give to any expecting mamas – especially in Hong Kong?
Everyone’s pregnancy is different so it’s hard to give out advice. I just tried to continue living as I did pre-pregnancy. I gave myself the time to rest if I needed to, growing a baby can be tiring. Getting some fresh air and eating well can make a world of difference.

You may already know Geneva. Or perhaps you know her as the mastermind behind A Pair & A Spare. Originally from Australia, Geneva Vanderzeil created the hugely successful blog turned business, A Pair & A Spare. She’s traversed the globe blogging about her travels, written a book, and has become a must-follow on Instagram and Youtube. We have loved following her pregnancy updates on IG (she seriously knows how to style a bump!) so of course we asked her to be our “The Bump” this month. We got to chat to Geneva about all things social media, her jet-setting lifestyle, how she has found being pregnant in HK and much, much more.

Tell us about yourself. 

My name is Geneva and I’m a lifestyle blogger and content creator. I’ve been in Hong Kong for seven years (splitting my time between here and Australia), and am pregnant with my first baby.

Can you tell us about your work with A Pair & A Spare, you’ve created a successful blog, YouTube channel and online presence, what drew you to working online?

I actually graduated from university in Australia as a town planner, and did that for five years before transitioning to running my online business full time. Early on in the days of blogging I started my website, all about sharing my DIY and creativity projects. Within a short time, it had attracted an amazing audience, and I was approached by a publisher to write a book based on my site, which I did! This was the reason I left my job, and since then the website and business has evolved across multiple channels and platforms. It’s such as amazing feeling to be able to do something creative every day.

How did you end up in HK and what was your first impression of Hong Kong?

My partner Ben (who is the founder of an interior design firm) and I were in London for three years prior to coming to Hong Kong. He saw an amazing opportunity to start his interior design business in Hong Kong, focusing on restaurants, bars and hotels, and it seemed too good to pass up so we decided quite quickly to come to Hong Kong. I honestly love this city, it has such an incredible energy! That said, these days I spend at least a week or two a month in Australia as a significant number of my clients are there, so in that way I feel I get the best of both worlds.

How do you find living in HK while pregnant? The medical services, getting around, the heat, etc.

Honestly, I can’t complain about this pregnancy, it has been fairly uneventful and an incredible/strange process of seeing my body change and grow. The first few months were tough as I had terrible morning sickness, but once that passed I felt like I had a new lease on life! When it comes to Hong Kong, the hustle and bustle can be frustrating when you don’t feel great, but I’ve really tried to always keep a positive outlook and not get bogged down in misery. It’s so easy to do so sometimes!

I really just try to laugh when things get bad ­– my crazy swollen feet, being pushed and pulled in elevators and the heat. Attempting to keep a smile on my face (even whilst maybe fighting back tears) has really worked, I think. From a medical perspective, Hong Kong will always be more efficient than other parts of the world (I had a check-up in Australia and was shocked at how much longer our appointment was and how chatty/explanatory the doctor was!), but I’m sure that if you had any major issues then the doctors here would give you the time you needed. I hope.

Have you been given any advice during your pregnancy that you think is worth sharing? What advice would you give to any expecting mamas?

Before getting pregnant, I was really focused on doing it in a way that would reduce the effects on my business. I know, I know, probably lots of other mamas reading this are thinking, “Keep dreaming lady!”. But, I searched high and low for tips and tricks for women who run their own businesses. One article I read mentioned that you should time your baby’s birth with a less busy period of the year, which we did (summer is quieter for my business, the due date [was in summer]). However, what that didn’t take into account was that I would actually feel my WORST during the first few months of pregnancy, which happened to be the incredibly busy September to December period… Which just goes to show you really can’t plan these things. The body will do what it wants!

In terms of advice I would give to other mamas, my main advice would be to go with your gut and don’t get bogged down in other people’s experiences, particularly because you often hear horror stories more than the great ones. And let’s face it, birth (in whatever form it takes) is a wonderful, beautiful thing! Oh, one thing that has kept me sane during this process has been exercise. I don’t mean crazy boot camps but just a level of activity every day for the whole nine months – for me it’s been daily Peak walks (graduating to flat ones towards the end), pre-natal yoga and swimming. I think this has made all the difference!

What have been your favourite moments during pregnancy and what have you struggled with?

Seeing the growth of my relationship with Ben over the last nine months has been such an incredible thing. I mean, we’ve been together 12 years, you don’t expect to discover this whole other side to a person. I guess embarking on a new adventure like this is bound to bring out different sides to a person, but he’s really been my rock and at every juncture just reiterated that I can do it and that it’s fun and not scary. It’s so cliché but I do feel really lucky.

You’re also a travel writer. Have been able to travel at all recently? Do you have any tips for travelling while pregnant?

Travel when pregnant is so tricky, particularly now due to Zika. Add to that the fact that we have spent half our time renovating in Australia, and my travel schedule for the last nine months has been mainly long-haul flights to Down Under. I’m super excited to start exploring again when the bub is born! We’ve got Cambodia, Europe and Okinawa on the cards. In terms of tips for travel, after around 30/32 weeks I think it’s too uncomfortable to do long flights, so that’s a good time to go to short haul destinations around Asia. Before that, I completely recommended doing something amazing… I hate the term ”Babymoon” but you totally need one!

Do you have any pregnancy style or beauty favourites? 

I have avoided buying maternity clothes during pregnancy, and have instead just bought dresses that I have sized up to fit the bump. In truth, I have worn six things on rotation constantly, and towards the end have opted for chic sneakers at all times… Comfortable feet are so so essential. In terms of beauty, I have been loving using pure jojoba on my skin to stop itching and stretch marks, and lots of amazing Epsom salt baths to reduce swelling.

You’re a fashion and interior DIY whizz – have you been preparing any projects for the new arrival? 

So, so many! It’s getting a little out of control. I can’t wait to start including more of this content on the site once the baby is born, as I know so many mums love it.

You’ve recently been renovating your home in Australia – what has that process been like? 

I have had such a good time renovating! We’ve been travelling every month back to Australia, so that has been a bit exhausting but luckily Ben does this sort of thing with his eyes closed so we’ve been able to enjoy it rather than hating every minute. We’re actually all finished and looking forward to sharing the whole series of renovation reveals online soon!

If you’re familiar with our “The Bump” series, you are probably already aware of Jenna Louise Potter’s gorgeous work. She’s the fantastically talented photographer behind some of our photoshoots with previous “Bumps” such as Jennifer Woollford, founder and director of Neon Marketing. So when she told us that she was pregnant with her second child, we simply, absolutely, 100%, had to have her as the next women in our series of inspiring, expecting ladies! We chatted to her about her experience of leaving her native South Africa for the 852, what she loves most about her work, meeting her husband, and her pregnancy story. Oh, and of course, we couldn’t not ask her about how to get that elusive picture-perfect family shot!

Tell us about yourself.

I was born in South Africa and grew up in Durban. Five years ago I married a wonderful man named Simon and we live in Sheung Wan. We have a two and a half year old, Florence Rose (Flossie) and a rescue dog named Pepper. I love to travel and experience different cultures and lifestyles. We have just returned from an incredible week in Japan. I love that we are able to expose Flossie to so many special places. It really is a huge perk of living as an expat in Asia.

When not travelling, we love to socialise, explore Hong Kong’s amazing foodie scene or chill at home on our terrace with friends after a hike along one of the many scenic trails.

How did you end up in HK and what was your first impression of Hong Kong?

The excitement of living in Asia was the main draw card. It was 2010 – I was young and single and prepared to take a risk. I fell in love with Hong Kong immediately. Everything just fell into place. I was fortunate to meet a “friend of a friend”, who introduced me to the most amazing people, some of whom are my closest friends today. And to top it all, I met my British husband, Simon, two weeks after I arrived. This was where I was meant to be, and I have never looked back. Hong Kong has an energy that is exciting and fascinating and the attitude here is that “anything is possible.”

How did you get into photography?

I have always loved creativity in all forms. I studied drama, media and film at the University of Cape Town. I also have a love of fashion and as a teenager, designed and made my own dresses. So, after graduating, I went on to become a fashion buyer for a prominent South African retail group.

My move to Hong Kong afforded me the opportunity to leave the corporate world. I took a job as a nanny, to pay the bills. The hours were great, I loved the children I looked after, and it gave me the time to get to know Hong Kong and enjoy settling in.

I started taking photographs of the kids I was looking after – natural images of them, going about their daily lives. Before I knew it, every weekend was booked up with family sessions, parties, celebrations and babies and all of these bookings were made through word of mouth. As sad as I was, when the family I worked for moved back to the USA in 2013, I knew it was the push I needed to focus wholly on my photography. It is so rewarding and I keep learning and growing in my approach to capturing special images.

What do you enjoy most about taking family portraits?

There is nothing more important than family. So to capture images of a family, that show their love and connection with each other, is a reflection of what life is really all about. I feel so privileged to do that.

This is your second baby. What have you learned from your first pregnancy? Is this one any different?

With my first pregnancy, I was so desperate to meet our baby. I feel as though I wished away my pregnancy. I’ve tried to be more patient this time and enjoy the journey. I can’t wait for Floss to have a sibling, but I am trying to be present in the moment, and enjoy special time with her, before our world gets turned upside down with a newborn!

I am also so much more grateful this time. I suffered a miscarriage at ten weeks, when Flossie was 16 months old. It was devastating and taught me what an absolute blessing and privilege it is to be pregnant and to be a mother.

So far I have felt very similar with both pregnancies. The standard nausea, food aversions and complete exhaustion in the beginning. Then a wonderful, energetic and healthy middle trimester and now the exhaustion and “heaviness” that comes with the last few weeks.

How do you find living in HK while pregnant? The medical services, getting around, the heat, etc.

Firstly, we have the most wonderful helper, Joana. She keeps me sane and has played a huge role in making it possible for me to continue working throughout this pregnancy. I would not survive without her!

Flossie was born at the Queen Mary Hospital and the staff and medical services were great. There are no frills but considering it’s basically free, the service is amazing.

I would suggest getting to check up appointments at least 30 minutes early, then the wait isn’t too long. Take a book, a fully charged phone – Instagram!, water and a snack!

Public transport is so efficient in Hong Kong and taxi’s are so affordable and plentiful – the transport infrastructure just works. Being pregnant in the Summer is tough but thankfully, indoors, everything is air conditioned.

I am shooting right up until 39 weeks, which is probably a bit ambitious, in the June heat! Thankfully regular foot massages, and Netflix really help!

Do you know the gender of the baby? Are you keeping it a secret or doing a reveal?

No we don’t know the gender. I love a surprise. We didn’t know with my daughter either and the moment my husband told me it was a girl is still one of my most special memories.

I love a baby in plain white so we are stocked up on white onesies and if this baby is a boy, we can get some gorgeous stuff delivered asap. I’m a huge fan of Next Direct and Bonds, both of whom deliver quickly to Hong Kong!

Got any tips and tricks you wish other mums told you before you became a mum?

I don’t think any tips really prepare you for motherhood! Each experience is unique to that mother. But I do believe new moms need to be kind to themselves and just do the best they can. There is no perfect mother. But we need to remember that we are perfect for our baby, just by loving them unconditionally and caring for them, the very best we can. In the beginning, the days are long but the years are short. We need to try and be patient when things are tough. Everything passes and a colicky baby soon becomes a delightful toddler.

Breastfeeding can be so difficult in the beginning. Seek help, if you need it. Once you get it right, life becomes so much easier. And don’t beat yourself up if you decide to bottle feed. Always do what’s best for you and your baby. Don’t make comparisons.

What have been your favourite moments during pregnancy and what have you struggled with?

The sound and flicker of the very first heartbeat, is an incredible moment. And then, the first time you feel your baby kick, makes you aware that this new life inside you, is a miracle. I really miss all the movement, once the baby is born. It’s almost an empty feeling.

I love dressing a “bump”. It’s such a relief when you start to look properly pregnant. Second time around I popped a lot earlier, which was great. I find the puffy, “ate too much at the buffet” look difficult to work with!!

I never buy maternity clothes, but rather upsize my favourite brands to accommodate the bump. A fitted body-con dress with a loose kimono type jacket or shawl (to cover the back bump!) is my go to. One of my favourite brands is Hatch Collection. Their pieces work so effortlessly well before, during and after pregnancy. I truly think the investment is worth it.

I’ve been going to regular prenatal yoga classes at The Yoga Room in Sheung Wan. I love the “gentle” exercise and hope it will help in the delivery room.

On the downside, dealing with acid reflux is awful, especially at night. I try to avoid big meals as it literally feels like my throat is on fire! I’ve also really struggled with exhaustion, especially with a second pregnancy. Dealing with a feisty toddler is not always easy, especially when patience levels are low!

Finally, do you have any tips on how to take a great family photo (or how to get the kids to stay still long enough to take one!)?

It’s so important to establish a connection with the family and to understand the type of image that they feel is authentic. I always encourage the family to choose a location that they are comfortable with and that has meaning for them.

The best images are the ones where kids are having fun and doing what they love to do – be it kicking a ball, jumping on a trampoline, reading books etc. My favourite images are the ones where families are interacting and engaging with one another. These are the images that will be cherished the most because you can really feel the connection and facial expressions will be beautifully authentic! However, I do always make sure to get at least one great family portrait of everyone looking at the camera – one for the grandparents – by any means possible, be it bribery, treats or just plain begging!

She has a ‘sweet’ career (she worked for Mars, the American confectionery company!) and wasn’t swayed by motherhood, but knew other women might be. She founded (and now directs) Neon Marketing, and now inspires and coaches other women to get what they want out of their careers, as well as move up the corporate ladder. Now that’s a goal we can totally get behind!

Tell us about yourself.

I moved to Hong Kong almost two years ago with my husband, Stuart, and our two daughters. We had always wanted to live and work abroad together, but we struggled to find the right opportunity that worked well for both of our careers. Before we moved, I was working as a Marketing Director in the UK, and I was finding being the best of who I wanted to be for my young family and my team and colleagues at work an increasing struggle. So, when Stuart was offered a role in Hong Kong it seemed like the perfect time for all of us to re-set as a family. It was a huge adjustment for me coming here without a job (moving continents was easy, transitioning to full-time motherhood was the big challenge!), but I took the opportunity to think about how I wanted to work moving forward, and decided that consulting would enable me to build my work around my family, whilst experiencing new challenges and growing my network. I set up my company, Neon Marketing, and haven’t looked back! It’s also enabled me to give more time to things I care passionately about, in particular advancing female leadership through mentoring for The Women’s Foundation. A friend and I also recently started a project to develop the brand and marketing for the Unsung Heroes, a choir for domestic helpers, which provides the opportunity to come together and sing every Sunday with a professional music teacher, and perform at high profile events throughout Hong Kong.

Tell us about The Women’s Foundation Mentoring Programme and why you have decided to mentor some of the women there.

One of the goals of The Women’s Foundation is to advance women leaders in Hong Kong, increasing the number of women in policy- and decision-making roles across sectors. A successful initiative it runs annually is the mentoring programme, matching 100 female mentors and protégés and supporting them through a fantastic programme of events over the course of the year. After leaving the corporate life, I found I really missed the opportunities to mentor those who are at an earlier stage of their career, and I could help by providing a sounding board for how they develop their career and deal with issues they might be tackling. Mentoring also creates space in the week for personal reflection, and I always come away from a mentoring conversation feeling like I’ve had the chance to take stock myself, whilst helping someone else. That’s incredibly important when life is moving so quickly, to step back and think about the progress you are making against your bigger goals.

What are the biggest challenges these women are facing?

Everyone is different, and challenges may range from how to get the next promotion, to wanting to change their career, to how to be more confident in themselves at work. I have found that everyone has very high expectations of themselves, which is fantastic but needs to be channelled in the right way. Several of the women I’ve spent time with have talked to me about developing their identity as a career woman and a mother. What I hear is a lot of company cultures make women feel they need to be single-minded about their careers, and if they don’t they’ll “fall behind”, and they grapple with how to reconcile their ambitions with being true to their values as a parent (this is not by the way, an issue that only affects women). What’s exciting is this next generation of leaders have an opportunity to become role models in demonstrating different ways to build careers. This will bring greater diversity into leadership teams, and will set a fantastic example to our children as they enter the workplace. I see my role as trying to help women find the right way to approach this that works for them and can work in their companies – so they can lead rather than conform to what has gone before.

What advice do you have for mums who want to continue working but also keep a balanced family life?

I’m so glad you used the word balanced. “Work Life Balance” sometimes feel like it has become outdated, or is seen as a negative expression. I don’t shy away from it. My view is that if you look at your day, your week or your year, you only have 100% to give – and it’s a choice how you give that time. You can give it to work, you can give it to your family, you can give it to your community, and you can give it yourself (whether it’s by exercising, going for dinner with friends, or reading a book). Where I struggled was thinking I could still invest as much in my work and my career, exercise, spend time with my friends, and then add children in on top. These unrealistic expectations lead us to feel like we’re failing all the time, and it’s hard therefore to feel fulfilled and enjoy life. I truly believe in the saying “you can have it all, you just can’t have it all at once”. Everyone will make different choices, and no one is right or wrong.

My first piece of advice is take the time to reflect and make the choice – unless you’re one of the lucky few who can survive on four hours sleep a night, choices will have to be made! My second piece of advice is to be mindful that things are always changing, and the right choice one year might not be the right choice for you the next year. You might decide one year is the year to really go for it at work and get that promotion, whilst the next year is time to keep delivering and being good at your job, but give yourself more time to volunteer at your child’s school, or train for a sporting event you’ve been wanting to do. I have found once you make the choice and you communicate it to those around you, both your family and your employer can be incredibly supportive. You then feel empowered to deliver on your priorities, rather than feeling constantly that you’re not doing anything well enough.

Got any tips and tricks you wish other mums told you before you became a mum?  

It’s OK not to spend all your free time with your children. I always felt that if I wasn’t working, I should be with them whilst they were awake. Hence exercise had to happen at 6am or 8pm (and therefore often didn’t!) or I’d find myself being with them physically but being distracted by other things I had to do. Make the most of whatever support network you have, and say yes when people offer to help. This is a real privilege of living in Hong Kong for those of us who have fantastic help at home. Someone once said to me that our ultimate job as parents is to teach our children to be independent from us, which often comes to mind when they are giving me a hard time about not being back for bedtime that day!

What advice do you have for mums who don’t have the luxury of leaving work or working part time?

Many women either need to work, or choose to work, full-time whilst having a family. I come back to my earlier point, which is to not set unrealistic expectations of yourself, as you’ll only feel like you are constantly failing. Make choices about how much of yourself you need or you want to give to your work, be clear on those choices with those around you, and then set yourself up for success. Especially as children grow older, they can be a part of that discussion and transparency about what you are doing and why it’s important to you, and can feel proud of you for it.

How hard is it to find part time jobs in Hong Kong? What should other mums know when looking for that kind of work?

Companies in Hong Kong have a reputation for not being very flexible when it comes to part-time working, but there are some positive signs that that is changing. Kimberly and Lauren at Pivot (Lauren was previously featured in The Bump) are doing a fantastic job of helping to match talented women who want to work flexibly with companies who can benefit from short-term or part-time employees. There are also lots of start-ups in Hong Kong who need to access talented people who are willing to work freelance or part-time, to access their skills and experience at a lower cost.

Of course, this approach doesn’t always offer job security. Permanent part-time work in bigger companies can offer a real win-win. The company saves on cost, whilst getting someone who is likely to be dedicated and highly engaged because the company supports them to work in the way they want to work. The employee beyond getting the part-time hours they are looking for, can still access the benefits that comes from employment such as sick leave, holiday pay and training and development. Attitudes to part-time, or flexible, working will only change as more and more people demonstrate that it works – so I strongly encourage people to seek out those in their existing company who will support them to make a case for part-time working, or to look for advocates in their network if they are looking for a new role, and try to make it happen if it’s what is right for you.

The common trap of part-time work many people fall into is working beyond their contracted hours, doing a five day a week job in four days, for example. This is always going to happen within reason – not many people in career roles only work eight hours a day – but do make sure you feel that the content of the job has been adjusted to fit the adjusted hours, otherwise you’re setting yourself up to feel like you’re never doing enough.

This is your third baby. What have you learned with the other two pregnancies? Is this one any different?

That’s the hardest question! I think every pregnancy is different because it depends on what else is going on in your life. Naturally with each pregnancy I think I’ve become more relaxed and “just got on with it”! That said, I’m mindful to listen to my body and I do think it’s more important than ever in pregnancy to know when to give yourself a break. I’m lucky this time around I’ve been able to make the time to exercise more, so I feel much fitter and that will hopefully pay off once the baby arrives!

Behind this innovative brand and service is co-founder and mama-to-be, Leisia Tsang. Leisia shares about influential women in her life (shout out to her mama!) who have helped push her to achieve her dreams in the fashion world as well as inspired her to become a mom herself. She candidly shares about her journey to getting pregnant and what her hopes and dreams are for her little girl. Read more in this edition of The Bump.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you ended up in Hong Kong.

I’m American born Chinese and grew up in Iowa with dreams to move to California. When I was 17, I moved to Los Angeles to study. In a blink of an eye, ten years flew by and I met my husband, Roy on a whim during a short visit to Hong Kong. After almost a year of long-distance and taking turns with long haul flights back and forth, I made the leap! I secured a job as the Divisional Merchandise Manager (DMM) of Womenswear for Lane Crawford, moved to Hong Kong and months later, we were married!

What was your first impression of Hong Kong?

I found living spaces to be extremely limited and very expensive!

How did you get into the fashion world and how did you end up in kidswear?

I studied Merchandise Marketing at FIDM in Los Angeles and spent the first ten years of my fashion career building my experience in design, product development, merchandising and buying. Moving to Hong Kong and transitioning into a multi-brand luxury retail at Lane Crawford, just when the e-commerce site was launching, exposed me to a more global and digital retail experience. After four years, I was ready for a change, ready to try something new. The idea to introduce a subscription business to the market together with having a base in Hong Kong, the gateway to China, it only made sense to build an affordable clothing brand that appealed to a growing market – kids!

We’re big fans of Little Starters. Tell us more about the brand and how it came about?

My business partner Ellen and I always wanted to do something in the kidswear realm. We wanted to start something that felt relevant for parents today, something progressive in its format. Introducing our brand, Little Starters, through a subscription service seemed to be the most forward thinking way to pursue the dream – especially because it’s still such a new concept for Asia.

Living and working in fast-paced cities like we both have, we understand how a busy lifestyle can put pressure on one’s time for family and maintaining a social life. Little Starters is a shopping solution for babies and toddlers that allows you to try before you buy in the comfort of your own home and we wanted to introduce that concept here.

(Editor’s note: I can attest to the convenience of having high-quality, yet trendy basics sent to my home for my kids!)

Tell us a little bit more about your pregnancy journey.

We had quite the emotional rollercoaster experience when it came to trying to get pregnant. In the beginning it was all fun, we were like many newlyweds… not trying but not “not” trying. As more time passed my ovulation cycle became part of our lives. With my husband, Roy being an airline pilot and not always around, it was just another obstacle when it came time to our window every month. After four years and four IUI’s, we decided to give IVF a go. We found out our first attempt through IVF was successful just 10 days after the embryo transfer, so it was a mix of relief and happiness for both my husband and me.

Do you know the gender of the baby? Are you keeping it a secret or doing a reveal?

Yes! It’s a girl and we couldn’t be more excited!

Name a moment in your pregnancy experience where you’d like to freeze time.

The first time I felt our baby kick.

What are your top three cravings?

I haven’t had any real cravings… but I am looking forward to being reunited with sushi and wine!

Name a funny moment in your pregnancy.

Hands down launching Little Starters the exact same day we did our embryo transfer! We did our IVF in Los Angeles, which is 15 hours behind Hong Kong, and I will never forget the excitement of going live with Little Starters from bed at 5AM while my business partner and I FaceTimed and sent out our first ever email announcing the launch… now that’s something that only happens once in a lifetime!

What has been the easiest trimester and which one proved most difficult?

I’ve been really lucky and have had a very easy pregnancy.

What has your experience been with being pregnant in Hong Kong? Healthcare system?

We’ve had a really wonderful experience in Hong Kong with a lot of positive energy to keep us going throughout our long journey. We’ve been fortunate enough to go through private healthcare with a wonderful OB-GYN and team of nurses at Central Health Medical Practice that have seen us through our IUI’s and partnered with our fertility specialist in LA to support us through our IVF.

What do you think every woman should know before getting pregnant?

Pregnancy is a beautiful thing. It’s a gift and I feel super blessed to have the opportunity to be carrying our child.

Any good suggestions on books to prep you for motherhood?

I’ve not read any books but my girlfriends near and far have sent me a wealth of information which has literally taken over my iPhone notes.

Do you follow a specific fitness programme to stay in shape?

I’ve done a lot of walking and hikes up to The Peak since being pregnant. I also feel eating healthy has attributed to keeping fit throughout my pregnancy.

Any fashion tips and tricks for maternity dressing?

Don’t buy maternity clothes – instead buy options that you can wear later. Beach dresses are your best friend.

Name a mama you find inspiring and why?

My own mom. She’s your typical Chinese mom and delivers tough love by the day which has given me the strength and encouragement to chase my dreams. Also, my good friend and Founder of Skin Laundry, Yen Reis. She is a mom of three, who has an insane balance when it comes to her growing international business and motherhood.

What are your hopes and dreams for your baby?

To grow up healthy, happy, and confident.
