The 100 days celebration is a significant milestone in the life of a newborn! Whether you’re hosting or attending a 100 days party, here’s what to know about the customs and traditions as well as inspiration on hosting your celebration and even where to find a 100 days cake.

Congratulations, mama! You’ve just crossed the fourth trimester — the first three months after delivery. Now that you’ve grown used to the sleepless nights (somewhat, at least!) and mastered breastfeeding, you can consider organising your baby’s 100-day celebration. If you are planning (or attending) a 100 days party, here’s what you need to consider.

100 Days Celebration Customs And Traditions

A 100-day celebration is traditional in Chinese culture, as it is in some other Asian countries as well. While get-togethers are also common at the end of the baby’s first month, the 100-day one is preferred because it marks the end of the most vulnerable period for new babies and mums or, in some cases, an end to confinement.

This celebration used to be fairly traditional with symbolic gifts, gold jewellery and red packets handed down from the older family members and well-wishers, as well as prayers and auspicious food being offered by the parents to their ancestors. In addition to this, often a lock of the baby’s hair would be cut and the bub would get his or her Chinese name (even if the Western name was already announced). The proud parents would also distribute red eggs (symbols of fertility) and pickled ginger to the guests. Nowadays, things are not quite as traditional and each couple is free to make up its own family traditions for this special day.

100 Days Celebration Party Venues

The first decision, after deciding to host a 100 days celebration, of course, is deciding on a party venue and catering options. There’ll be babies and kids present (obviously!) but at the same time it isn’t strictly a kids’ party, so you’ll need to consider space to play, baby changing, feeding facilities and your baby’s nap schedule. Also, it should go without saying that you’re hosting a celebration whilst looking after a three-month-old baby, so you’ll want to consider how much you can take on and delegate duties where you can!

Residential Clubhouses

If your apartment building has a clubhouse this is probably your easiest option. Close to home (for naps, delivering decorations and getting presents home), and it lets you be flexible to choose how big or small you want to go when it comes to everything from event decorations to party catering, 100-day celebration cakes and more.

Private Kitchens

There are some great private kitchens around Hong Kong, perfect for hosting your 100-day celebration. This can give you the best of both worlds — the privacy for your party and the experts taking care of the cooking and cleaning up!

As in most cultures, it’s customary to bring a gift for the new baby at a 100-day celebration. Close family members and friends may gift the baby accessories such as a longevity pendant and bangle bracelets for wrists and ankles, while others might choose to give more practical gifts like baby clothes, children’s shoes, hats and toys, along with presents for the new mum. Walking And Hiking

If you’ve never really been a fan of the gym or you’re starting to take it a little slower, why not explore some of Hong Kong’s walking trails? Depending on what you’re in the mood for, there are various walking routes for every level.

Prenatal Swimming

Swimming is an excellent activity during pregnancy, both for prenatal fitness, as you won’t be stressing your joints, and for relaxation. Head to hotel pools (and make it a babymoon!) or the beach for a dose of sunshine and salt while you float. It’s also a great excuse for a new set of swimmers! Don’t forget the sunscreen.

Cycling

Cycling might not be as comfortable during the later stages of pregnancy and the more your bump grows the more unbalanced you might begin to feel. Opt for a stationary bike when this happens as it is still a great form of cardiovascular exercise. But, if you’re more of an outdoorsy mama and you still feel comfortable on two wheels, try taking the bike out for a spin. Don’t own a bike? There are plenty of bike rental shops near popular biking trails.

The ideal time for a professional pregnancy photoshoot is early in your third trimester. At this stage, the bump is in its best shape, and Mamas are not too uncomfortable to move around.

For a professional newborn shoot, try to plan it within the first fortnight. At this stage, babies have the lovely fresh-out-of-the-oven look and these pictures have an almost unreal, dream-like quality. If you prefer to wait a bit, most photographers also offer sitter sessions and milestone shoots.

Clothing – Maternity Photography

Your photographer will be able to help with sheer and draped material that can give your maternity photoshoot a beautiful, feminine look. If you are comfortable, show some skin – take off your bra and trust your photographer to use the perfect angles to capture your beautiful baby-making body.

What you wear will also be determined by the location you choose, maternity shoots offer a lot of flexibility when it comes to location. There is something gorgeous about a sun-kissed pregnancy photoshoot at a Hong Kong beach. Similarly, if there is a special story to your baby’s journey, you may like to bring that out with your choice of shoot venue.

Clothing – Newborn Photography

Mamas-to-be can naturally be quite awkward about being the centre of attention. Start off slow by taking pictures of only your belly – highlight your bump by placing your fingers in a heart shape around the bump. If you have an older child, you can have him or her kiss your stomach.

Your specialist newborn photographer will know this. Always choose a pose that is safe for a newborn and doesn’t stress the neck.

Props – Maternity Photography

Props for a professional pregnancy shoot are easy. You could use your pregnancy scans, a favourite onesie, baby shoes or mum-to-be sashes that you wore for your baby shower. The highlight of every shoot is growing inside of you and don’t really need to highlight much else.

Props – Newborn Photography

If you have beautiful bedding and swaddles, you could use those as props. Most photographers will bring their own props which could include flower wreaths, toy trains (to lie the baby in), baskets and blankets.

Do:

When it comes to pregnancy and postnatal life there’s one thing that all mamas need: a great supportive bra! A comfy nursing bra is a necessity in your maternity wardrobe. If you are breastfeeding, your nursing bra will become a second skin (as well as your new BFF!). We’re here to help you find the perfect fit, where to shop, and explain the changes to your breasts during and after pregnancy.

We know that preparing for the birth of a newborn means that you already have enough on your mind, besides thinking about your underwear. However, the risk of blocked milk ducts is something you don’t want to experience either (trust us!), but if 80% of women are wearing ill-fitting bras, then this number is likely to be even higher for nursing women.

When you’re nursing, wearing a properly fitting bra is more important than ever. To help, here’s a handy guide on what to expect and how to stay comfortable and supported (bra-wise at least!) throughout your pregnancy, during the breastfeeding stage, and beyond.

From small to larger bosoms, we’ve listed the best shops in Hong Kong to get fitted for a bra as well as online shops so you can shop at your own convenience.

Understanding Your Breast Changes Before You Buy A Nursing Bra

Your breast size will fluctuate constantly during pregnancy and after giving birth, so we thought we’d break down what you should expect in six stages, to help give you an idea of what type of bra you should be wearing at each point:

Breast Changes In The First Trimester

As early as the first three months of pregnancy, you’ll experience dramatic changes in your cup size, possibly by up to three cup sizes. It’s not always necessary to wear a maternity bra during the first trimester but because your breasts are starting to swell, the best thing to do is to listen to your body. Many get very sore boobs at this stage so it’s worth investing in a comfortable wireless bra.

Breast Changes In The Second Trimester

Your bras from your first trimester may be feeling increasingly snug, as well as other items in your wardrobe, so again listen to your body and adjust your bra size based on how it fits. This is the stage where some women also like to invest in a sleep bra for support and comfort during the night. Seamless, non-wired or flexi-wired bras (which are less restrictive) are perfect for this time. If you want to stick to your traditional underwired bra, just make sure that it fits properly.

Breast Changes In The Third Trimester

This is when your breasts first dramatically increase in size due to the introduction of the milk supply (it’s getting real now, mama!). Bosoms will be at their maximum size, weight and tenderness (we feel your pain) due to the milk production. Your seamless bra from the first three to six months of your pregnancy will also come in handy here.

Your breast size during the eight to nine month of pregnancy will most likely be your nursing cup size from when the baby is one month old until you introduce solids (your breast size will reduce then due to weight loss and less feeds, therefore, less milk production). This is the perfect time to get yourself fitted for a nursing bra (around 36/37 weeks).

Breast Changes Immediately post-birth (baby is 0 to 4 weeks)

You will need the most comfortable bras during this stage (…as well as plenty of sleep, back rubs and to be showered with adoration because you deserve it!) because immediately post-birth there will be some engorgement as your breasts learn to regulate their milk supply. It’s not recommended to wear a cupped-size bra during the fourth-trimester, in order to avoid mastitis or other discomfort and pain. Your trusty seamless bra will, once again, come in handy here.

Four-plus weeks postpartum breast changes and during breastfeeding

From four to eight weeks post-birth, breasts will return to the size they were at eight months of pregnancy. This generally happens as the body has learnt just how much milk is required to feed your baby and it should, hopefully, no longer produce any excess. A flexi-wired nursing bra will give you added support and a flattering shape at this stage. The flexible nature of the wire is designed to move with your body and is much more comfortable than the rigid wire found in mainstream bras.

Continuing breastfeeding with solids and weaning

As you continue breastfeeding, or feeds become less frequent after introducing solids, you will most likely see continued changes in your size. Often your breasts might drop to a smaller size, this is often due to weight loss and the introduction of solid foods to your baby’s diet which means less milk production. If you feel at any time that your bra is not fitting you as it should, it’s best to get re-fitted so that you are properly supported and unrestricted (well, as unrestricted as a bra will allow you to be).
