Breastfeeding can be an exciting but sometimes difficult journey, which is why we got your nursing questions answered by expert midwives and lactation consultants. Plus, find the right nursing bra or breast pump, read about real-life breastfeeding experiences and so much more.

At Sassy Mama, we are so proud to support every mama and papa on their parenting journey. With the highs and lows, there is no roller coaster ride in the world that quite compares, and the breastfeeding experience is no exception!

Most of us are well aware of the benefits of this fabulous natural baby food. This magic potion can help protect babies from gastrointestinal infections and skin diseases as breastmilk is rich in antibodies. Breastmilk also helps to strengthen the bub’s immune system. Of course, skin-to-skin contact while breastfeeding is also a great way for bond-building between the mother and her newborn. There are health benefits for mums, too, as it reduces stress levels, helps the uterus contract post-birth, and even helps in the prevention of cancer.

The 100 days celebration is a significant milestone in the life of a newborn! Whether you’re hosting or attending a 100 days party, here’s what to know about the customs and traditions as well as inspiration on hosting your celebration and even where to find a 100 days cake.

Congratulations, mama! You’ve just crossed the fourth trimester — the first three months after delivery. Now that you’ve grown used to the sleepless nights (somewhat, at least!) and mastered breastfeeding, you can consider organising your baby’s 100-day celebration. If you are planning (or attending) a 100 days party, here’s what you need to consider.

Chinese New Year Cheongsam and Qipao

100 Days Celebration Customs And Traditions

A 100-day celebration is traditional in Chinese culture, as it is in some other Asian countries as well. While get-togethers are also common at the end of the baby’s first month, the 100-day one is preferred because it marks the end of the most vulnerable period for new babies and mums or, in some cases, an end to confinement.

This celebration used to be fairly traditional with symbolic gifts, gold jewellery and red packets handed down from the older family members and well-wishers, as well as prayers and auspicious food being offered by the parents to their ancestors. In addition to this, often a lock of the baby’s hair would be cut and the bub would get his or her Chinese name (even if the Western name was already announced). The proud parents would also distribute red eggs (symbols of fertility) and pickled ginger to the guests. Nowadays, things are not quite as traditional and each couple is free to make up its own family traditions for this special day.

100 Days Celebration Party Venues

The first decision, after deciding to host a 100 days celebration, of course, is deciding on a party venue and catering options. There’ll be babies and kids present (obviously!) but at the same time it isn’t strictly a kids’ party, so you’ll need to consider space to play, baby changing, feeding facilities and your baby’s nap schedule. Also, it should go without saying that you’re hosting a celebration whilst looking after a three-month-old baby, so you’ll want to consider how much you can take on and delegate duties where you can!

If your apartment building has a clubhouse this is probably your easiest option. Close to home (for naps, delivering decorations and getting presents home), and it lets you be flexible to choose how big or small you want to go when it comes to everything from event decorations to party catering, 100-day celebration cakes and more.

Many Hong Kong hotels have function rooms well equipped for 100-day celebrations. Shangri-La, Hotel Icon and The Ritz-Carlton are all popular options for Hong Kong families. Likewise, you can keep things simple by booking a family-friendly restaurant or even a weekend brunch!

100 Days Celebration Cakes

No party is complete without a decadent cake and a 100-day celebration for your baby is no different! There’s no shortage of cake shops and patisseries in Hong Kong, but we do love the 100-day cake options on offer from Complete Deelite, Pheonix Sweets and Sweet Secrets.

100 Days Party Decorations

Most party supply shops are well stocked in decorations for traditional celebrations like a baby’s first 100 days. Whether you want helium balloons or prefer a floral affair, the 100-day party is a celebration to be remembered and so the sky is the limit when it comes to decorations. You might want to consider eco-friendly party ideas as well.

100 Days Gifts And Presents

As in most cultures, it’s customary to bring a gift for the new baby at a 100-day celebration. Close family members and friends may gift the baby accessories such as a longevity pendant and bangle bracelets for wrists and ankles, while others might choose to give more practical gifts like baby clothes, children’s shoes, hats and toys, along with presents for the new mum. For more 100-day gift inspiration check out Sassy Mama’s guide to gifts for new mums and babies.

Sassy Mama Tip: If you’d like to keep to Chinese traditions, wrap gifts in red paper to symbolise luck, theme your gift around the Chinese zodiac or offer a lai see packet (following the rules of new notes, no coins, even numbers except the number four!).

Being pregnant is no excuse for throwing your fitness regime out of the window! Contrary to the common misconception that exercising during pregnancy is risky, regular exercise performed safely and optimally during pregnancy actually provides many benefits. For Mamas-to-be, it’s a chance to prepare the body and mind for all the challenges of childbirth and motherhood.

Plus, your baby will also likely benefit, as prenatal activity has been linked to babies with healthier hearts and lungs, and lower chances of chronic health issues. With that in mind, we have compiled a list of physical activities, including prenatal yoga, Pilates and general exercises that have been proven to be conducive to a healthier and better-managed pregnancy.

Swimming is an excellent activity during pregnancy, both for prenatal fitness, as you won’t be stressing your joints, and for relaxation. Cycling

Cycling might not be as comfortable during the later stages of pregnancy and the more your bump grows the more unbalanced you might begin to feel. Opt for a stationary bike when this happens as it is still a great form of cardiovascular exercise. But, if you’re more of an outdoorsy mama and you still feel comfortable on two wheels, try taking the bike out for a spin. Don’t own a bike? There are plenty of bike rental shops near popular biking trails.

Maternity And Newborn Photography Tips From Experienced Hong Kong Photographers

best tips for newborn and maternity photography hong kong

Timing – Maternity Photography

The ideal time for a professional pregnancy photoshoot is early in your third trimester. At this stage, the bump is in its best shape, and Mamas are not too uncomfortable to move around.

Timing – Newborn Photography

For a professional newborn shoot, try to plan it within the first fortnight. At this stage, babies have the lovely fresh-out-of-the-oven look and these pictures have an almost unreal, dream-like quality. If you prefer to wait a bit, most photographers also offer sitter sessions and milestone shoots.

Clothing – Maternity Photography

Your photographer will be able to help with sheer and draped material that can give your maternity photoshoot a beautiful, feminine look. If you are comfortable, show some skin – take off your bra and trust your photographer to use the perfect angles to capture your beautiful baby-making body.

What you wear will also be determined by the location you choose, maternity shoots offer a lot of flexibility when it comes to location. There is something gorgeous about a sun-kissed pregnancy photoshoot at a Hong Kong beach. Similarly, if there is a special story to your baby’s journey, you may like to bring that out with your choice of shoot venue.

Clothing – Newborn Photography

Newborn shoots are usually taken at home. This allows Mamas and babies to be comfortable and natural, sleep comfortably while shots are being set up, etc. If you do choose to shoot at a studio, most newborn photographers are well set up with temporary baby-changing facilities and even a comfortable chair for mum to use while feeding.

poses newborn photography maternity photoshoot baby photography newborn photographer maternity photography pregnancy photoshoot maternity photo hk

Poses – Maternity Photography

Mamas-to-be can naturally be quite awkward about being the centre of attention. Start off slow by taking pictures of only your belly – highlight your bump by placing your fingers in a heart shape around the bump. If you have an older child, you can have him or her kiss your stomach.

Poses – Newborn Photography

Your specialist newborn photographer will know this. Always choose a pose that is safe for a newborn and doesn’t stress the neck.

Props – Maternity Photography

Props for a professional pregnancy shoot are easy. You could use your pregnancy scans, a favourite onesie, baby shoes or mum-to-be sashes that you wore for your baby shower. The highlight of every shoot is growing inside of you and don’t really need to highlight much else.

Props – Newborn Photography

If you have beautiful bedding and swaddles, you could use those as props. Most photographers will bring their own props which could include flower wreaths, toy trains (to lie the baby in), baskets and blankets.

Spectra, Haakaa, Medela breast pump, all names you probably weren’t familiar with until your baby arrived! From electric breast pumps to manual breast pumps, wearable pumps and everything in between! We’ve round up the best breast pumps in Hong Kong and where you can buy them. Get to know the machine that is going to be your new breast-friend…

For all mums who want to breastfeed or are returning to work, but also need the freedom to step out of the house without taking a newborn along, pumping can be a lifesaver. Initially, expressing milk may not come naturally. After all, it can be an unknown and relatively weird sensation and the constant noise can be enough to make some uncomfortable (read about 10 mums’ breastfeeding and pumping tales here). Thankfully, today’s breast feeding machines are sleeker and quieter than before, so with HR practices becoming more breastfeeding-friendly, you could even pump sitting in a corner of your office! Do your research before deciding which breast pump is right for you and your little one.

What Are The Different Types Of Breast Pumps?

Sassy Mama number peach 1Electric and manual

Sassy Mama number peach 2Single or double (only available in electric versions)

Sassy Mama number peach 3Closed system vs open system

Double Electric Breast Pump

At the top end of the scale are the double electric breast pumps (usually they also have a battery-operated option). These draw milk from both breasts at the same time. They save time and are usually very efficient, but the downside is they are expensive.

Single Electric Breast Pumps And Manual Breast Pumps

Single electric pumps are more economical but take longer. Manual breast pumps are quite light and easily portable and are relatively inexpensive, but some of them are not as efficient at pumping. If you are going to rely on pumping fairly regularly (even once a day, for the night feed), these will only add to the workload of a tired mama. However, silicone manual breast pumps are quite the game-changer, especially in the early days of breastfeeding.

Closed System Breast Pumps And Open System Breast Pumps

The other thing to consider when you are looking at buying or renting a breast pump is if it’s a closed-system or an open-system. The closed system type doesn’t allow the milk to flow into the machine. Some of the closed-system pumps are also known as hospital-grade breast pumps and are considered the most high-end and hygienic. This system is more expensive than an open one, where there is no barrier between the milk and the pump mechanism.

What To Consider Before Buying A Breast Pump

Maybe you’re pumping so your partner can get involved in feeding your newborn. Perhaps your maternity leave is coming to an end and you’re heading back to work (read here to find out more about maternity leave and employment laws in Hong Kong). Whatever the reason, when buying a breast pump, you naturally want to buy the best that you can afford.

Besides the cost and the efficiency, consider factors like how much it weighs, how loud it is (for electric ones), how easily available replacement parts are, compatibility with other brands, if it’s wireless, and how discreet it can be (many pumps are now hands-free). If you are looking for a manual pump, look for one with an ergonomic handle design so it doesn’t put too much pressure on you, or a silicone manual pump. Particularly if you’re a new mum, consider popping over to Breastpump City in North Point as you can actually try the pump beforehand and the team there will help make sure the flange size fits you properly, definitely a good idea before making a (possibly) big purchase. These factors all make a big difference in being able to carry the pump around if you are planning to return to work or travel soon after delivery.

Top Breast Pumps In Hong Kong: Breast Pump Brands

Youha Breast pumps hong kong wearable breast pump portable breast pump hk affordable breast pumps pregnancy breastfeeding hong kong breast feeding baby youha the one youha embody

Youha – Youha Embody wearable breast pump, double electric breast pump and Youha The One breast pump

A relatively new brand that is getting rave reviews is Youha. It was designed and made by a father who wanted to help his wife with her breastfeeding journey, while also giving their young child the healthiest option available. The original pump, Youha The One, is a lightweight and efficient double-electric pump. It comes at a fraction of the cost of some others on this list ($798) and what’s even better is that most of its parts are compatible with Medela products as well. This is especially useful for new mamas who may have been gifted Medela bottles as well as second-time mums who have a lot of feeding gear left over from the first baby. Youha also offers two more pumps including a hands-free wearable breast pump ($1,388) and double breast pump ($468).

Youha has five modes, including massage, stimulation and deep expression, for optimal pumping. It also offers a personal setting function that mums who have settled into their lactation routine appreciate. Its touchscreen can be locked so it doesn’t accidentally get switched on while you’re carrying it around. Youha, which is now being recommended by a number of lactation consultants and midwives, is available at a number of stores and hospitals across the city. You can also shop at Baby Central.

Medela Symphony Medela Freestyle Medela Swing Maxi medela swing Breast pumps hong kong wearable breast pump portable breast pump hk medela breast pumps pregnancy breastfeeding hong kong breast feeding baby

Medela – Medela Symphony, Medela Freestyle, Medela Swing Maxi, Medela breast pumping bra

This brand wins the vote of most Sassy Mamas in office, and then some! The company has excellent breast pumps to suit all types of requirements. You can even rent some of the models from the official distributor, Celki (see the website here), which has stores across Hong Kong. Even if you choose to buy from any of the baby stores or online, this is one of the most widely accessible and convenient options. The Medela bottle is easy to store directly in the fridge once you’ve pumped, and even has a nipple that can be directly attached.

The Medela breast pumps to consider are:

  • Symphony (hospital-grade)
  • Medela Freestyle, Medela Swing Maxi (double-electric)
  • Medela Swing (single-electric)

Breast pumps by Medela can be used with Medela’s special breastfeeding bustier that allows hands-free pumping. All Medela products available in the city use the brand’s patented 2-phase expression technology. This simulates the sucking rhythms of a baby, which is fast and furious for two minutes, before settling into a calmer yet deeper suck. Because it copies this pattern, Medela claims that it stimulates the natural milk production reflexes of mothers. This Swiss company is passionate about promoting breastfeeding and also offers apps, online forums, expert advice and more.

Medela breast pumps are available at different price points, from around $1,700 for the single Medela Swing pump to $25,000 for the hospital-grade Symphony version. However, renting the Symphony is a lot more affordable.

Shop at: Baby Central, Baby Sophie, Mothercare

Spectra – Spectra S1 hospital-grade breast pump, closed system breast pumps

It has two levels of night lighting, so mums can pump discreetly without waking up the baby. It has a massage mode, followed by an expression mode to stimulate maximum milk production.

haakaa manual breast pump haakaa silicone Breast pumps hong kong wearable breast pump portable breast pump hk affordable breast pumps pregnancy breastfeeding hong kong breast feeding baby haaka haka hakaa milk pump

Haakaa – Silicone manual breast pump, hands-free breast pump

This is one of the most popular, easy to use and innovative manual pumps that originates from New Zealand. The breast pump, made completely of silicone, is a one-piece product (pump plus bottle) with no removable parts. It works especially well for new mamas who have excess flow and find that they leak from one breast while feeding on the other (the manual pump is a favourite feature of one of our Sassy Mamas who never wants her milk – a.k.a liquid gold – to go to waste).

You use it by simply squeezing it hard, placing the flange tightly over the nipple to create a vacuum and then letting go. The vacuum starts creating a sucking sensation which stimulates the breast. This coupled with feeding from the other breast causes milk to flow into the bottle automatically. Since breastmilk can be stored in the freezer for months, it is a good way to bank breastmilk, if you’re looking to return to work soon.

Accessories available include a cute flower stopper or a cap (around $69). The 100ml unit is $168 on the official Hong Kong stockists website, and in many stores and sites across the city, including the official site, Milky Mama and Baby Central.

Haakaa, 3188 1030, www.haakaa.hk

There is so much to stay on top of as a new parent (especially for those of us with multiple kids) when it comes to tracking your baby’s milestones. Here at Sassy Mama we’ve curated a list of top pregnancy, labour and baby tracking apps. These will help you monitor the growth of your bub, from bump to baby.

There’s no rest for the wicked, but as we mamas have found, there’s no rest even for really wonderful mothers either! When you’re running around sleep deprived and covered in curious substances, it can be tough remembering when (and on what side!) to feed the bub, let alone keep track of all those dirty nappies (and nap times).

Luckily, we’ve rounded up our favourite baby tracking apps to chart their development (right from their little heartbeats on a scan to when they are running circles around us!) – something that definitely comes in handy at your next obstetrician or paediatrician visit. In addition to the nitty gritty details about availability and cost, we’ve also enlisted our own team of Sassy Mamas to share how they used the apps to make their first couple of years a little easier. Take a look below!
