Look For Recommendations And Bedside Manners

Scan online forums, testimonials and official websites and enquire about consultation fees. Schedule an introductory appointment with the specialist of your choice. Observe the doctor’s bedside manners. A doctor with whom you can be upfront about worries, one who answers your questions thoroughly and has the magic mix of knowledge and compassion to soothe any nerves is the best doctor for you and the baby.

Have A Birth Plan

You won’t have one as soon as you find out you’re pregnant (unless it’s not your first). But you will have a broad idea of what you want and don’t (natural birth, C-section, V-BAC, etc.). Through your antenatal checkups, reiterate these with your doctor.

There is no sure-shot way of giving birth and your obstetrician may have to change direction, depending on how the pregnancy and labour progress. But if things are on track, it’s integral that the doctor is on board with all your wishes, be it for the birth or post-delivery plan.

Check The Doctor’s Availability And Accessibility

Doctors are busy, no doubt, but if they aren’t likely to be available when you need them, they aren’t right for you. This might happen for a variety of reasons. If you are a high-risk patient, if it’s a second baby, etc., you may expect to have shorter labour or more immediate assistance.

A doctor who can get to the hospital you’re booked into faster than others will be an advantage. Babies rarely follow a schedule (unless it’s a planned C-section), but check your doctor’s holiday calendar close to your due date (especially if it’s around Christmas or the summer holidays).

What is essential is getting all documents and paperwork in order (births in Hong Kong have to be registered within 42 days of delivery). Sassy Mama Tip 1: The most tiresome process can often be getting the baby’s passport photo as photography shops can be quite inflexible when it comes to changing angles to accommodate a baby unable to hold his or her head up. Hong Kong Passport

Is my child eligible for a Hong Kong passport?

If your child is a Chinese citizen, a permanent resident of the HKSAR, and a holder of a valid Hong Kong permanent identity card (see these FAQs to learn more) then they will be eligible for a Hong Kong passport.

What is the application process?

As with everything in Hong Kong, the government here has made applying for and getting a baby’s passport super easy. All you need is to fill out a simple 2-page ID 842 form. You can obtain the application forms by calling 2824 6111, sending an email to enquiry@immd.gov.hk or visiting any Immigration Office in Hong Kong. If your child does not have a permanent identity card, as is the case for a newborn, an additional ROP 3 form is needed.

To apply in person (with original documents), you can make an appointment online. You can also apply by post or drop-in (with photocopied documents), but this may extend the process by 2 to 3 working days. Within 14 working days, you can go back and collect your baby’s passport or even allow a representative to pick it up through a signed authorisation (ID 678).

What do I need to bring to my appointment?

If your child already has a permanent identity card:

• The completed ID 842 form
• The child’s Hong Kong permanent identity card
• One recent colour photograph on a white background (40mm X 50mm), see photograph requirements here.
• Consenting parent or legal guardian’s Hong Kong identity card or valid travel document
• The child’s birth certificate with the consenting parent’s name, or a court order for proof of the consenting legal guardian’s custodial rights
• Application fee ($185 for 32 pages or $230 for 48 pages) to be paid via EPS, cash, or credit. If you are posting the documents, you should enclose a cheque
• One other document with proof of identity or a Form for Countersignature (ID 641) with a copy of the counter-signer’s ID card or valid travel document.

If your child does not yet have a Hong Kong permanent identity card:

• The completed ID 842 form
• Completed application form for a Hong Kong permanent identity card (ROP 3)
• Document supporting the child’s right of abode (a Hong Kong birth certificate showing permanent residence status is sufficient)
• The child’s birth certificate with the consenting parent’s name, or a court order for proof of the consenting legal guardian’s custodial rights
• Two identical recent colour photographs on a white background (40mm X 50mm)
• Consenting parent’s Hong Kong identity card or valid travel document
• Application fee (same as above). ($185 for 32 pages or $230 for 48 pages) to be paid via EPS, cash, or credit. If you are posting the documents, you should enclose a cheque
• Plus one other document with proof of identity or a Form for Countersignature (ID 1641) with a copy of the counter-signers identifying document

Australian Passport

Is my child eligible for an Australian passport?

If either you or your partner is an Australian citizen, your child is eligible for an Australian passport. 

What is the application process?

You’ll first need to apply for Australian Citizenship by descent (this takes around one month), and you’ll need your child’s original Hong Kong birth certificate in order to apply. Once you’ve got those, you need to make a visit to the Australian Consulate-General over in Wan Chai to hand in your forms in person (thankfully, your baby can stay home!). Luckily, there are convenient times for lodging applications, from Monday through Friday, 9am to 4pm but you must be sure to book in advance. In about 15 business days, you can go back and pick up your bub’s passport.

Sassy Mama Tip: When the system works smoothly, the entire process of obtaining an Australian passport takes about six to eight weeks so don’t plan any trip before your baby is two months old just to be on the safe side. There were lengthy delays during the pandemic so check with the consulate when you submit your forms on the current wait times.

A passport – the application form for minors can be found at Passports Online (and must be filled online as you cannot download a blank form) or you can pick up blank forms in person from the consulate.

To complete the passport application form, both parents with parental responsibility for the child must give consent on the form, and the consent signing must be witnessed. This can be done at the Consulate-General for an additional fee. The consulate will call both parents to check consent.

What do I need to bring to my appointment?

• The completed Australian passport Overseas Application form
• Application fee (the equivalent of AUD 164 in HKD, approximately $860), not including any additional Consular Fees, if needed. Only HKD is accepted, and this can be paid by credit card or EPS. This fee is adjusted regularly, so be sure to check out the fee table before you go.
• The child’s proof of Australian citizenship
• Your proof of identity with your photo and signature. Your own Australian passport is best.
• Lodging parent’s proof of address
• Original birth certificate (with the names of both parents)
• Two colour photographs (35 to 40mm X 45 to 50mm, check other guidelines here), with one signed as a true photograph by a guarantor (someone who possess an Australian passport or is employed in specific fields, refer to Step 6 here.)

Canadian Passport

Is my child eligible for a Canadian passport?

Your child is likely a Canadian citizen if at least one parent was born in Canada, or became a naturalised Canadian citizen before the child was born. To find out for sure, check the process of applying for a citizenship certificate for your child. There have been some recent amendments to the Citizenship Act and further clarification can be found here. 

What is the application process?

Getting your baby’s Canadian passport is fairly easy in Hong Kong. Do remember that while the Consulate General of Canada in Hong Kong has moved to Exchange Square in Central, the Passport and Citizenship Services office has moved to Quarry Bay. Make sure you’re headed to the right spot! 

You’ll need to complete a passport application form, and also an application for Citizenship Certificate for your child. 

What do I need to bring to my appointment?

You’ll need to complete your passport application form and pay your fee online before booking an appointment to present your documents in person. If appointments are not available for the date required, applications can be mailed in or dropped off at the Consulate General of Canada in Hong Kong in Quarry Bay.

For in-person appointments, both parents must be present for the application process along with your child.

• A fully completed application form
• Two identical passport photos (50mm X 70mm); one must be signed by a Guarantor (the “Other” applying parent can be your Guarantor), plus the photographer must write their name, their complete address and the date the photos were taken. See the full photo requirements here.
• Original birth certificate
• Proof of Canadian citizenship or the receipt for the child’s citizenship application, original birth certificate or citizenship certificate.
• Original or certified photocopies of both parents’ valid government issue ID with signature
• Original or certified photocopies of the child’s valid passport of their other nationality (if applicable)
• Processing fee (CAN$100, approximately $550) to be paid by Visa or MasterCard (Canadian dollars), EPS, or cash order (HKD only)

French Passport

Is my child eligible for a French passport?

So long as at least one parent is a French national.

What is the application process?

Applying for a French passport in Hong Kong can sometimes be tricky. It requires original documents and a complete set of photocopies and the consulate is often very crowded. So go through these details carefully to make sure you have everything you need before making an appointment online.

Along with the passport, you must apply for a request for transcription of the birth certificate (to be completed by the French parent). While requesting transcription, it is necessary to indicate any accents to be worn on the child’s first name.

What do I need to bring to my appointment?

• Your baby. All passport applications require the physical presence of the applicant, though you needn’t bring your child (under 12 years old) while picking up the passport.
• 1 passport photo taken less than 6 months ago, refer to photo requirements here.
• A transcribed copy of your baby’s Hong Kong birth certificate.
• Proof of French nationality of at least one parent on the date of birth of the baby.
• Passports of both parents with photocopies
• A French marriage certificate. If you have a foreign marriage certificate, it is advisable to request a transcription from the French consulate.
• The parents’ family booklet with a photocopy of the marriage page (if you are married); otherwise a full copy of each parent’s birth certificate.
• A request for transcription of the birth certificate. You can download these forms here.

Indian Passport

Is my child eligible for an Indian passport?

If either you or your spouse is an Indian citizen, then your child is eligible. Note that Indians are not allowed dual citizenship, so this will be the only passport you will apply for.

What is the application process?

If you are applying for an Indian passport for your newborn baby, you’ll have to first apply for the birth registration certificate online and declare that the child does not hold a passport from any other country.  Remember that passport and visa services have been outsourced to an external application centre, BLS. The application usually takes a month.

What do I need to bring to my appointment?

• An application form that has been filled in online and then printed out
• You must bring your baby
• An affidavit signed by both parents and attested by the Office of Oath Commissioner of Hong Kong/Macau.
• Both parents must be present or a single parent with passport of both. You must also produce an affidavit if you are a single parent or if the other parent is not available for certain reasons (mentioned under para II). If a parent is unable to obtain the consent from the other parent for obtaining the passport for the child, another affidavit must be submitted along with supporting documents.
• Original and self-attested photocopies of the first two and last pages of the parent(s)‘ passport(s).
• Original and self-attested photocopies of the HKIDs/valid visas of the parent(s).
• Three recent passport-size photographs (2 inch X 2 inch) with full face and ears visible and a white background
• Original and self-attested photocopy of the baby’s birth certificate
• Original and self-attested photocopy of the marriage certificate of parents.
• In case one of the parents is a foreign national, a certificate from the Embassy/Consulate of the foreign country stating that the child has not been registered as its citizen and not been issued a passport OR a signed affidavit by the parents, attested by the Office of Oath Commissioner of Hong Kong.
• An undertaking submitted by both parents declaring that they have not applied for foreign nationality for the baby.
• Fees of $632 (including passport and birth registration fees)

British Passport

Is my child eligible for a British passport?

You will need to navigate through some tough language for this one. If either you or your partner is British “not by descent,” meaning that if you (or your partner) were able to obtain British citizenship either on your own or were born in Britain, then your child will be able to become a British citizen “by descent.” However, if you are a naturalised British citizen or a British citizen by descent yourself, this doesn’t apply to you. If this is unclear, go through this website, which pretty much puts everything in plain language.

What is the application process?

The good news is that the entire British passport process is completed online without the need for any appointments in person (except for interviews in special cases). The bad news is that it could take eight weeks plus, starting from the time that it is received by Her Majesty’s Passport Office in the UK. So be sure to plan your travel way ahead!

What do I need to apply?

Since everything is conveniently done over the world wide web, you’ll only need a credit card. Some additional details to have on hand:

• Passport numbers of both parents
• Two digital identical new photos of your child (35mm x 45mm), see the requirements here. 

Sassy Mama Tip: Photos can now be taken digitally and there is no longer the necessity for the child’s eyes to be open (if they are under 1 year old). You can even take one at home with your baby lying down on a white sheet.

• A complete colour copy of any other current passports issued by other countries, plus additional supporting documents that you may need to provide.
• A MasterCard/Visa/Visa Electron/Visa Debit card to pay a total of GBP 72.86 online (approximately $696), which includes the passport and courier fees
• You will need to have your baby’s identity confirmed by someone who has known you at least two years, holds a UK passport and works for or is retired from certain professions.

Sassy Mama Tip: Though the website says the person confirming your baby’s identity needs to live in the UK, you can ignore this as, in this case, he or she needs to live in Hong Kong.

You need to enter all this into the online passport application service and wait patiently for the next eight weeks or so. The good news is that you will receive an email notification when they receive your documents, approve the passport and send it out to you. This reassures you that they haven’t forgotten about you!

American Passport

Is my child eligible for an American passport?

If either you or your partner are American citizens, then your child is able to receive a US passport too.

What is the application process?

When obtaining an American Passport you can also apply for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (similar to a birth certificate) and a Social Security card at the same time. The U.S. Consulate in Hong Kong is where you’ll have to go for your appointment, which can be made online for business hours from Monday through Friday. Processing usually takes 20 days. Social Security cards arrive separately in 3 to 6 months. But first, here are some important items to bring and details to sort through:

Before you begin completing the Passport Form (DS-11 form) either online or by hand, your baby will also need a Consular Report of Birth Abroad. Ignore the part in the form where they tell you to mail it in as this will cause delays, and instead, bring them with you to the Consulate.

What do I need to bring to my appointment?

• Your baby! There are no exceptions to this policy.
• Both you and your spouse must be present, plus your original passports. Copies or ID cards are not acceptable.
• Or, your passport and a copy of the other parent’s passport, along with a notarised affidavit form of the other parent’s consent (Form DS-3053)
• Your child’s Hong Kong birth registration, see details here.  (Hospital birth certificates or other documents are not acceptable)
• A marriage certificate (must be original). If your baby was born out of wedlock or within six months of your marriage please check here for additional requirements.
• Proof of termination of any divorce or death certificates of any prior marriages (in English or translated yourself if not in English already).
• An affidavit showing all of your and your spouse’s periods and places of residence/physical presence in the United States and abroad before your baby’s birth. Here are some documents you could present to prove your physical presence in the US. If your child was conceived out of wedlock, additional evidence such as the biological parents’ physical presence at the time of conception may be required.
• Completed application forms for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (Form DS-2029), US passport (DS-11) and Social Security Number (Form SS-5-FS).
• A US passport-sized photo of your baby (2 inches X 2 inches or 5cm X 5cm) on a white background. Please see here for photo requirements.
• USD100 for the Consular Report of Birth, USD115 for the passport. Total USD215 (approximately $1,667). Consulate accepts cash (HKD only), credit cards (USD only), cheque, bank draft or money order. If paying by cash please note that they don’t accept $1,000 bills or greater.
• You will need to show the original receipt to the guards to enter the Consulate to pick up your child’s new passport.

Sassy Mama Tip: The Consulate has both nursing and changing facilities which is helpful, but please do not bring any food, drinks or laptops. Also, note that phones will be left with security during your appointment.

Birth Stories In Hong Kong: A Fast Unexpected Labour

It was a Monday morning. I went to my clinic for a regular checkup. I was 40 weeks pregnant and with the lack of sleep, and a very active toddler at home, I suggested getting a membrane sweep to get things moving. My doctor said it would take a good day or so for the labour to start and to monitor it.

So off I went home, made my favourite recipe and midway through devouring my lunch, the contractions started. The contractions got very intense and after just 15 minutes I was crying in distress. I rang the hospital to inform my doctor but couldn’t communicate clearly. I then called my husband to pick me up. I thought I had more time. Little did I know I was in full labour.

My husband rushed from work. I couldn’t sit in the car, so I sat on all fours in the passenger seat, with my face against the headrest and my rear towards the windshield. If anyone saw us that day, they would have thought we were out of our minds!

“Speeding up the rocky meandering path up to Matilda Hospital, facing backwards in a moving vehicle while dilating was not part of my birth plan.”

I still wonder how my amazing husband focused on the road. With me screaming at the top of my lungs and asking him to stop every 2 minutes, he didn’t even get a chance to park, so he left the car outside the outpatient entrance. I yelled through the entrance in agony. I don’t remember how many people were in the lobby, but they were truly in for a surprise.

One of the outpatient nurses handed me a wheelchair, and I shouted “No!”

Outpatient Entrance: My Maternal Instinct Immediately Took Over

Suddenly, I had a final powerful contraction, and an intense gush of water burst through my pants. My water broke. I knew my baby wasn’t waiting for anyone. That’s when my maternal instinct immediately took over, and in front of everyone in the lobby that day, I ripped off my pants to hold my baby’s head in my hands. All that was running through my head was “please don’t suffocate!”. I had no idea what I was doing, or how I would get my baby out safely. My husband was right beside me the whole time, trying his best to get anyone he could to help.

A Fast But Empowering Delivery

The midwives from the maternity ward rushed in along with the resident OBGYN and paediatrician. They surrounded me for support, but my body couldn’t wait any longer, I felt another urge to push again and my baby was almost out of me, in my arms. I was bending over, holding her with my umbilical cord.

“I couldn’t hear any sound from her. I started to panic, and so did everyone else.”

With all the strength from everyone around me, I was carried onto a gurney and as soon as I touched down, my baby’s full body came out with her cord tugging at my placenta. She was all purple. I was praying for her loud cry. The cord was finally cut and she was taken away from me. I was roaring for an answer, to see if she was ok. A minute later, I finally heard her cry for air and sighed in relief. My husband repeatedly yelled back to me across the long corridor “She is okay, she is okay”. It was very emotional.

I was rolled away to deliver my placenta and get a few stitches. Despite what had happened, I felt so much stronger than my previous pregnancy. Neither my designated OBGYN nor paediatrician made it in time. I was so grateful for all the midwives who stepped in, and the resident doctors who were there to help me and my baby that day.

For most of my second pregnancy, I tried to manifest a better birthing experience than my first. I have experienced two miscarriages and was pregnant during the protests and the peak of COVID. My first pregnancy was a medicated vaginal delivery. When the medication was first injected, it numbed the left side of my body and I was in a very uncomfortable birthing position. Then, when it came to active labour, the epidural wore off. Many hours later, after lots of pushing, my son’s heartbeat dropped. I had a fever from dehydration and exhaustion.

“After 24 hours of labour, my baby was torn out of me. I felt everything.”

My first postpartum experience was difficult. There was a lot of physical and mental healing, alongside being so overwhelmed as a first-time mum. It took me a long time to recover and feel somewhat “me” again. I’ve previously written about postpartum depression, and how much goes unnoticed. This time, I promised myself I would do everything in my power to give birth in a much better mindset.

I was a lot more positive and active in my second pregnancy. I went to see Reiki specialist, to help me release any negative and draining emotional energy. I worked out with prenatal trainer and pregnancy guru Ziggy Makant. She made me feel so strong, both mentally and physically. I also went to a traditional Chinese medical clinic where they helped with acupuncture and moxibustion to get my baby in the correct position. I kept on manifesting and visualising an easier birth experience with energy crystals from Angel Illuminate.

Women all have different feelings about having sex while pregnant. Sex can be something that they embrace during pregnancy or something they can feel repulsed by – both feelings are normal! As a sex therapist, I hear all about the concerns, fears and curiosity women have about engaging in sex when pregnant. I have attempted to answers some of the common questions.

Is Sex Safe During Pregnancy?

A common concern many women and their partners have is whether they will hurt their baby if they have sex while they are pregnant. Many men and women avoid sex during pregnancy for this reason alone. Unless your doctor tells you otherwise (and it is always good to ask), it is perfectly all right to have sex while pregnant. Sex in an uncomplicated pregnancy is safe and will not hurt your baby. And no need to worry – the baby doesn’t feel anything either. So if you’re feeling up to it, then go for it!

If you have been classified as a high-risk pregnancy, it is advisable to get a medical opinion. Please also follow a doctor’s advice in the following cases:

• You have placenta previa (low lying placenta)
• You’ve experienced unexplained vaginal bleeding
• You have cervical incompetence or weakness
• Your waters have broken
• You are at risk of premature labour

Is Sexual Desire (or the lack of) Normal During Pregnancy?

Sexual desire and the ability to become aroused vary from woman to woman and vary throughout the pregnancy. You may find that you have zero desire and do not enjoy being sexual during pregnancy or you might feel quite a bit of desire and stay sexually active almost up until delivery. This variation is very normal! Some women also feel more attractive during pregnancy and want to be more intimate with their partners, whereas some feel uncomfortable in their own skin and don’t want to be touched by their partners.

Pregnancy conditions like nausea, vomiting and tiredness in the first trimester may also result in you feeling less desire for sex. However, many women notice that their sex drive increases in the second trimester. They may feel that they are able to adapt better physically and emotionally to their pregnancy by then. Late in pregnancy, with the baby bump getting larger, some women may be too physically uncomfortable for sex. They may be anxious about the impending labour or are just too tired for sex.

What Sexual Activity Is “Normal” During Pregnancy?

The reasons for variations in sexual activity and interest are complex. They can be influenced by the emotional responses to the pregnancy, how the woman is experiencing the changes to her body, and the internalised beliefs about sexual activity during pregnancy. If you are feeling different about sex during pregnancy, just recognise that it’s ok and normal. It’s also common to feel a different level of desire than your partner and important that you can both have your experiences without being angry or blaming one another.

What Positions Are Most Comfortable During Pregnancy?

While sex is safe for most couples in pregnancy, it may not be all that easy. You will probably need to find new or different positions that feel comfortable for you. Some positions will be more comfortable than others and at different stages. For example, sex with your partner on top – the missionary position – can become uncomfortable quite early in pregnancy because of your bump. Also, any position where your partner is going in too deeply might be painful.

This can be a time to explore and experiment together until you find something that works for both of you. Some other positions that may work well are:

Cowgirl: In this position, you are on top and straddle your partner. This protects your belly by keeping your weight off your abdomen and lets you control the depth of penetration. You can also straddle him while he sits on a chair.

Doggy-style: While you are kneeling on all fours your partner enters from behind and your belly is protected. You can also use a pillow under your belly for additional support.

Sitting at the end of the bed: Your partner can kneel or stand in front of you. Having your partner enter you from a sitting position manages to keep weight off your abdomen as well.

Spooning: This position where you’re laying on your side in front of your partner is easy and does not hurt your belly. If your energy level is low lying sideways in the spoon position is comfortable and doesn’t require too much stamina.

What Alternatives Are There To Intercourse?

Sexual intercourse is not the only way to convey affection and desire for your partner. There are various other activities such as hugging, kissing, massaging and oral sex. All of these activities are safe during pregnancy. Many couples tend to have more “above the waist” cuddling and caressing experiences during pregnancy, plus more mutual masturbation of each other, than actual intercourse.

Be open to a whole range of what is considered sexual intimacy. Intimacy comes on a spectrum. Between a back rub and full-blown, high-intensity hours of sex, there’s a whole lot in between. Couples can talk about what those things are that make them feel intimate and loving and make a list. Write down 10 things that make you feel are intimacy activities and be open to trying them out.

How Can Mindfulness Benefit Your Sex Life?

Some women may find that they’re spending too much time in their head worrying about sex or their changing physique and then have a difficult time feeling amorous in the bedroom. If this is you then it’s time to practice mindfulness.

Mindfulness is where you bring your complete and full attention to the present moment. You let go of worrying about the past or the future, along with expectations of what you “should” be feeling or looking like. Instead, you focus on what is happening right now. If your mind tries to jump into worry mode, give yourself a gentle nudge back to the present. You will find that you can’t be anxious if you are truly focused on the present moment. Tune in to all of your five senses to bring your energy into your body and out of your head. If you tune into all your bodily sensations when you are with your partner you will create a more rich and fulfilling sexual experience.

At 28 weeks pregnant, most of us have to take the dreaded glucose test to rule out the risks of gestational diabetes. It is not known how and why perfectly active and healthy individuals who have no family history of diabetes could exceed the normal glucose mark. Pregnancy hormones throw everything off balance and as my dietitian at Central Health Clinic, Justine Quintano, explained to me it’s often just pure luck. In general, blood sugar below 7.8mmol/L is considered normal on a glucose test, and my readings tipped just 0.2 over the mark. Hong Kong takes gestational diabetes seriously and I was immediately sent to a nutritionist cum dietitian to make adjustments to my diet.

Dietitian Advice For Gestational Diabetes

The basic rule of thumb is to eliminate all refined sugars (cakes, sodas, cookies etc.), switch out the simple carbs for complex carbs (brown rice, cauliflower rice, quinoa, spelt, durum pasta, multigrain brown bread, etc.), eat smaller more regular meals throughout the day and increase your ratio of protein and fibre intake which helps you stay full for longer periods.

My dietitian’s advice was to supplement meals and snacks with avocado, cheese, eggs, nuts, seeds to assist with satiation. I was told to slightly increase my complex carb intake again by 1/2 if I was still ravenously hungry because the aim is not to feel like I am starving.

I’m fortunate to have the time to make my daily meals to stay on top of my caloric intake. Here are five of my go-to recipes in my second and third trimester. These can be used not only by mums but also others in the family with pre-diabetic or diabetic conditions. And they are delicious enough to be enjoyed by everyone in the family. I’ve divided them into breakfast ideas and ideas for lunch/dinner. Bon appetit!

Gestational Diabetes Recipe Ideas For Breakfast

To reduce my regular carbs and increase protein, I switched out my routine of having morning toast for eating two scrambled eggs instead, with cheese and tomatoes and a side of avocado. On alternate days, I would have steel-cut oats served with berries for breakfast.

Overnight Oats

Ingredients:

½ cup rolled oats
¼ cup mixed nuts and seeds
½ cup almond or oat milk

Directions:

1. Soak oats overnight in the refrigerator.
2. In the morning top with nuts and seeds and serve cold. You can always add some cranberries, raspberries, blueberries for an extra boost!

Gestational Diabetes Recipe Ideas For Lunch

Miso Glazed Pork Chops With Nectarines Or Peaches

This is ideal for when it is summer and stone fruits are in season. I was inspired by adapting an FT Weekend recipe. This recipe serves two and is easy to put together for a quick meal with a friend who drops in unexpectedly.

Ingredients:

2 large pork chops, each about 200g
2 peaches or nectarines, cut into quarters
A pinch of sea salt
Freshly ground black pepper
2 to 3 sprigs of rosemary
Mix all together to marinate for about 30 minutes.

For the Miso glaze:

60g white miso paste
1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar
1 tbsp of soy sauce
1 peach/nectarine peeled and smashed

Directions:

1. Mix together ingredients for Miso glaze and set aside.
2. Combine all other ingredients and marinate for around 30 minutes.
3. Heat your pan or skillet. Place the rosemary in the pan and then the peaches/nectarines to char them a little. Remove them onto a plate, leaving the rosemary.
4. Place pork chops in the pan to cook. Spoon the miso glaze over and flip the chops – about 3 minutes each side. Repeat the miso glaze on either size.
5. Cook for another 3 to 5 minutes and add the charred peaches/nectarines back in the pan.
6. Cover in a foil and let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Baked Squash With Minced Turkey And Mixed Vegetables

This simple recipe packs in protein, vitamins and fibre and keeps you satiated, with an hour of preparation time. This particular recipe serves one, so it’s ideal for when you are home alone and want to pamper yourself with a good meal.

Ingredients:

Half a medium-size squash
1 shallot
250g minced turkey
80g mixed frozen vegetables
Olive oil
Salt and pepper
Mozzarella cheese (grated)
Sprigs of coriander and parsley for garnish (optional)

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 200ºC.
2. Hollow out half a squash.
3. Dice the shallot and squash (small cubes) and lightly stir fry with olive oil.
4. Add in the minced turkey and frozen vegetables. Add salt and pepper to taste.
5. Spoon the mixture into the hollow squash, sprinkle on top some mozzarella cheese before popping into the oven to bake for 15 minutes at 200ºC.
6. Garnish with coriander and parsley if you wish and it’s ready to serve.

Gestational Diabetes Recipe Ideas For Dinner

Cauliflower Base Pizza

If you manage to find frozen cauliflower rice, it saves you the tedious preparation work, otherwise here’s how to make the cauliflower pizza base from scratch. You can make batches and freeze the sheets. Cauliflower is a great substitute for rice and flour if you’re on a low carb diet or there’s anyone at home with pre-diabetic conditions. You can expect to be making this fairly regularly as it will quickly become a family favourite. After all, who doesn’t love pizza?

Ingredients:

1 head of cauliflower
1 egg
50g goat cheese
Sea salt

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 200ºC.
2. Cut cauliflower into small florets and steam. Then cook in the oven for 35 minutes. It should dehydrate until soft and crisp on the top.
3. Blend, and use a cheesecloth to wring out any remaining moisture.
4. In a mixing bowl, add the egg, 50g of soft goat cheese (any type, I used Le Mothais Sur Feuille By Janier) and a pinch of sea salt to the cauliflower pulp. Mix well and lay it out on a baking tray sheet for the pizza base.
5. Bake for another 15 to 20 minutes at 200ºC and flip it to the other side, bake for another 15 minutes. You should get a golden brown crispy consistency.

Make Your Pizza!

Now that you have your bases you are ready to assemble your pizza! Spread tomato base (any pasta sauce will do) and add your toppings. I like adding a few different types of cheeses (pregnancy craving tip: this is a great way to eat unpasteurised cheese!) and some sliced mushrooms. Bake for another 15 to 20 minutes at 200ºC.

Baked Chicken With Sweet Potatoes

I’ve been advised to eat root vegetables in moderation and I found that sweet potatoes are a great complex carbohydrate alternative to potatoes. These are also richer in vitamins and nutrients that are beneficial during pregnancy.  This simple one-pan bake is a quick and hassle-free recipe to prepare. The original recipe calls for potatoes that I swapped for a healthier option.

Ingredients:

1 chicken breast
1 medium-size sweet potato
2 to 4 sprigs of thyme
Olive oil
Salt and pepper

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 220ºC.
2. Remove the sweet potato skin, and dice into small cubes.
3. Place in a baking tray, drizzle olive oil, salt and pepper.
4. Put the chicken breast on the bed of sweet potatoes along with the sprigs of thyme. Drizzle olive oil generously all over.
5. Bake in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes.
6. Remove the tray and cover it with aluminium foil for 10 minutes to let it rest. Ready to serve!

Mama, congratulations! Your strong body has grown a tiny little human over the last 6 to 7 months and now you’re finally on the final stretch of pregnancy. The best description of these last few weeks is from a popular meme: “Each month has 28 to 31 days. Except for the last month of pregnancy, which has 1,478…”

Those last few weeks can be very uncomfortable. You may feel exhausted, struggle to sleep (although this can be seen as a good thing, as it prepares you for bub’s arrival) and when an object falls on the floor, you genuinely have a mini-debate as to whether you really need to pick it up or not. I have some tips to help you and your birth partner prepare for the baby’s arrival, while also indulging in much-needed self-care.

The Final Stretch Of Pregnancy: Movements Matter

If you’re in your third trimester, I’m sure you know this all too well. It’s certainly something that pregnancy health professionals are very passionate about. Around 26 to 28 weeks (sometimes earlier), your baby will have a distinct pattern of movements that become recognisable. Every pregnancy is different, so as a midwife it’s so important to make sure all pregnant women know that movements are the best indicator of how your baby is doing and coping inside.

If you notice movements have decreased or feel different, call your delivery ward or health professional and let them know. Even as a baby grows and gets bigger, their movements can feel more like rolling movements, but they will not decrease.

Preparing Your Mind And Body

Mental health in pregnancy is just as important as physical health. Meditation and mindfulness can equip you with the mental strength to have a positive birth experience and it’s a great self-care habit for after the baby’s arrival.

During pregnancy, we can prepare our minds by affirming what we already know – you are okay, you are safe, and your strong body is doing exactly what it is meant to do.

Preparing With A Birth Partner

A supportive birth partner is very important to your labour and birth experience. Research has shown that a supportive birth partner can increase birth satisfaction rate, higher rates of going into labour naturally, higher rates of normal delivery, lower rates of needing analgesia, shorter labours, less likely to have a c-section or instrumental delivery as well as better outcomes for the baby (assessed by APGAR score after birth).

If your partner is educated on how to help you during birth and the postpartum period, the more supported you will feel. And what’s also great is that your partner feels needed and helpful. Win-win! If you haven’t already, use those last few weeks to educate yourself and your partner and be aware of the choices you have for yourself and for your baby. Aside from your antenatal classes, talk to other pregnant mums, join social mum groups, etc. – this is an amazing way of building your village!

As the final stretch of pregnancy draws in and the time to meet the new little love of your life nears, I really encourage mums to talk about their feelings, fears and any thoughts they may have. This is known to help reduce any anxiety you may feel in those last few weeks and prepare you for the next, very exciting, chapter ahead.

Self Care

Creating time for self-care and healthy habits during pregnancy is so important for your wellbeing both mentally and physically mama. If you are in your third trimester and feeling like you are struggling and can’t wait for bub’s arrival, here are some useful tips.

Listen to your body: What does your body and mind need today? Rest? Coffee with your best friend or simply a big long cry to release all those emotions.

Exercise: This is such an important one for low-risk mamas and babies. If you can even get out for a 30-minute walk in the evenings, it can do you a world of good. Research shows that exercise throughout pregnancy also results in more optimal labour outcomes, shorter labours and better recovery postnatally.

Take prenatal vitamins: It is important to take your prenatal vitamins routinely. Most healthcare providers will recommend you take them even while breastfeeding and into your postpartum period.

Prioritise your mental health: If you can, practise meditation, mindfulness, reading, singing or whatever makes you feel at peace. If you are feeling overwhelmed or anxious about the birth or impending motherhood, it is a good idea to talk with a counsellor or psychologist.

Eat the rainbow: Fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and beans, all of the good things for optimal nutrient intake whilst your body works so hard to continue to grow and nourish your baby.

Be positive: I know some days you may feel tired, overwhelmed and “so over being pregnant”. But after a while, you will look back and realise how truly incredible you and your body are! Think of the near future where you will hold your little one in your arms – it’s closer than you think!

Connect with your baby: Spend even 10 minutes per day with your hands on your bump. Talking, singing or reading to your bun in the oven can help you bond and connect. Remember, your baby can hear and recognise your voice!

Get sunshine: Vitamin D makes us feel better and is essential for optimal health. Try to get some afternoon sun on your skin, mama.

Postpartum Recovery Must-Haves

Heading into this final stretch of pregnancy, it’s great to have a checklist for items to pack for your postnatal recovery. You’ll want to enjoy every second of the newborn bubble, but it’s also a very important time to rest and recover.

• Maxi pads, as you will experience bleeding after birth
• Nursing bras. And remember, comfort is key!
• Lip balm. Every mama talks about how dry their lips are in labour
• Swaddles as you’ll soon understand the art of swaddling and realise how soothing it is to a newborn
• Soft, cotton underpants (if you are having a C-section make sure they are high waisted, above the wound)
• Breast and perineum gel packs (pro tip: keep some cabbage in the fridge, as cold cabbage leaves can help with engorged breasts)

Keep your hospital bag packed and ready, your parenting journey is about to begin!
