The ban on single-use plastic and the waste charging scheme will be implemented this year. Here’s what it means for you and your family…

Let’s address the undeniable truth, Mamas, our actions as humans have dire consequences for our planet. And if we have any chance of preserving the Earth for our children, it’s important to seek sustainable alternatives and minimise our waste footprint. Luckily for us, Hong Kong is stepping up its game in going green! The city is taking a leap towards sustainability with the ban on single-use plastics and a new waste-charging scheme.

With so much new information floating around, it can be hard to keep up. Keep reading to find out everything you need to know about Hong Kong’s efforts to become more eco-friendly.

Single Use Plastic Ban Hong Kong

The Ban On Single-Use Plastic

In an effort to reduce use of plastic, Hong Kong is taking a stance against single-use plastic products by implementing a ban on items like disposable plastic straws, stirrers, and cutlery starting Monday, 22 April 2024. This means that when you order dine-in or takeaway food at restaurants, you’ll no longer get single-use cutlery, cup lids or food containers. The ban also extends to non-plastic alternatives such as cotton buds, umbrella covers, glow sticks, plastic toothpicks, party hats and more. However, certain items like pre-packed food with attached utensils (for example, ice cream cups with spoons in them) and packaged beverages with plastic straws (juice boxes, VLTs) are exempted.

Hotels and guest houses will no longer offer free toiletries in synthetic disposable containers or provide in-room water in plastic bottles. There are some specific situations where exceptions are allowed, for instance in hospital wards and correctional facilities, scientific purposes, medical and public health requirements and emergencies.

Find out more about the ban on single-use plastic here.

MSW Waste Charging Scheme Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s Waste Charging Scheme

Hong Kong will soon implement the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) charging to reduce landfill waste, it was to start from Thursday, 1 August, 2024 but has now been moved to mid-2025 or beyond (check here for updates). This means that residents and businesses will be required to use prepaid government-approved garbage bags to dispose of domestic, commercial and industrial waste. If you need to dispose of large or oddly sized items that don’t fit into these garbage bags (for example, large furniture, mattresses, bookshelves etc), you’ll have to purchase special labels. The aim is to reduce all the waste that goes into our landfills by encouraging people to recycle and reduce it.

You can purchase the designated bags at various authorised locations, including supermarkets, convenience stores, pharmacies and online platforms. Click here for a full list of purchase points and prices.

Recycling is encouraged, and you can dispose of recyclable materials separately in recycling bins without the need for the approved bags. You can also separate food waste and dispose of it at designated collection points. To make things easier, Hong Kong has established over 170 collection points across the city, including recycling stores and kerbside collection booths. Plus, smart recycling bins will be installed at public and private housing estates.

If you throw away garbage without using the right bags or labels, you can be fined $1,500. The law applies not only to the person who disposes of the waste but also to anyone who causes or allows someone else to do it. For example, if you ask or allow your domestic helper to dispose of waste improperly, both you and your helper could face issues.

Want to save money on waste charging? The best way to do this is to reduce the amount of waste you produce in the first place. You can use the Waste Reduction Calculator to estimate how much you’ll spend on waste charges each month. Plus, you can save money by reusing items or recycling them at recycling networks such as GREEN@COMMUNITY. You can even download the Carbon Wallet mobile app to track your carbon reduction journey and earn points to redeem a variety of rewards from free MTR rides, local eco-tours and eco-friendly household goods to sustainable fashion and plant-based food and drinks.

For more information on the waste charging scheme, head over to mswcharging.gov.hk.

Although the ban on single-use plastic and the waste charging scheme might bring some initial inconvenience as we adapt to the changes, it’s a good first step towards sustainability and the environment. These measures are aimed at reducing our reliance on disposable plastics and encouraging responsible waste management. So, while it may take a bit of getting used to, let’s embrace these changes and remember that we’re contributing to a cleaner and healthier future for our city and planet!

From food to cosmetic refills, home furniture and more, there are tons of environmentally friendly shops in Hong Kong. From Live Zero to Slowood and everything in between, here’s where you can pick up your zero-waste essentials in the 852!

We all know how damaging plastic and non-biodegradable items can be to the environment. And sadly, recycling will not be enough. The good news is that many large corporations, from IKEA to Unilever, are taking an eco-friendly turn. In 2020, children across the world managed to influence the popular toy company LEGO to stop plastic packaging and the company also announced that it would switch over from plastic to a plant-based material by 2030.

As the children who moved LEGO have proved, pressure and persistence from individuals and families can bring about change. Many concerned parents who want to leave a clean, green, and habitable planet for our children make important eco-friendly choices on a daily basis. And while it is difficult to go completely zero-waste in the city, there are more environmentally friendly shops and products in Hong Kong than ever. It’s the little green steps that count.

So where do we start?

Sassy Mama number peach 1Refuse plastic shopping bags. A canvas tote is much more useful (and stylish!) anyway.

Sassy Mama number peach 2Carry refillable cups and bottles. Whether it’s a Stanley Cup or the Hong Kong yoga class staple S’Well, it’s easy to pop a bottle in your tote and go. Download the Water for Free app to find free refills in the city.

Sassy Mama number peach 3Reduce, reuse and recycle – let this mantra guide most of your buying decisions.

Sassy Mama number peach 4Shop at eco-friendly stores (in Hong Kong, if possible) and choose sustainable brands.

Environmentally Friendly Packaging Recycle Hong kong

Now that you’ve got the basics down, here’s a list of environmentally friendly and zero-waste shops for your day-to-day essentials. We tell you where to go if you want to pick up organic food for the family, packaging-free beauty products for yourself (or natural insect repellant for the kids), bamboo bed sheets and furniture for the home, and those saviours in the Hong Kong humidity – stainless steel bottles. Happy shopping!

Island Life — Sustainable household cleaning products

Did you know that the number-one ingredient in most of your household cleaning products is water? That makes your products bulky and heavier to transport (not to mention the carbon emissions of that transport!). While refillable options from bulk stores are a great start to get us on the sustainability track, Island Life takes it one step further, providing a concentrated tab with minimal packaging. Simply put the tab in your own bottle, add water and you’re done! The best part, it’s affordable too, with prices starting at $78 for three refills!! Try it out yourself with the Dish Soap or Hand Wash starter kits which come with a refillable Island Life glass bottle and three soap tabs.

Are your kids eco-warriors? Instilling knowledge of climate change and sustainable living early on goes a long way. Here are some tips to teach your kids to lower their carbon footprint.

With climate change causing visible havoc, we’re all striving to make more conscious decisions be it shopping at zero-waste stores, wearing durable sustainable wear or hosting eco-friendly parties. The aim is to preserve and improve the environment for future generations. And speaking of the next generation, it’s important to teach kids early on how to lower their carbon footprint. It could be small actions like switching off the light when you leave a room, to slowly building a habit to go for the greener choice. And kids learn best through action so Papas and Mamas, get in on the act, we’re teaching kids how to lower their carbon footprint!

First, Explain The Technical Terms

No one likes a lecture, so we know that being sat down for a chat about climate change and sustainability probably won’t work. It’s important for kids to take small, easy to understand steps in understanding the whole picture. Depending on the grade your child is in, some schools may have already introduced technical terms in everyday activities but here’s a tip on how to start and progress:

  • Start by introducing simple terms like habitat (and the different kinds like rainforest, polar and the ocean), weather and ecosystem.
  • Next, explain what are greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane and other gases) and why they’re harmful to us (air pollution) and how they affect the atmosphere and cause global warming. You can also give examples on actions that release greenhouse gases. Examples include the burning of fossil fuels to generate electricity.
  • Then comes the key part; explain climate changecarbon footprints and what living a sustainable lifestyle means (you can also give examples of actions).

Sassy Mama Tip: To explain the terms, you can prepare flashcards, draw a map connecting the dots or even go old-school with a powerpoint to keep things interactive!

When we explain technical terms starting from the basics, it’ll be easier for children to grasp and understand how they’re connected and you don’t have to teach them all in one seating. Remember, we don’t want it to sound like it’s all doom and gloom – keep positive energy (even if we’re pretty worried about Mother Nature)!

lower carbon footprint calculate green living

Calculate Your Carbon Footprint Together And Explain How It’s Related To Climate Change

Time for a family brainstorming sesh! List out your daily activities – how long are the lights on, what mode of transport do you use, what type of food do you consume and so on. You can do an online carbon footprint calculator together, this gives you a rough estimate of how eco-friendly your current lifestyle is. This also helps kids understand that our own actions – big and small – directly affect nature.

Start Implementing Daily Activities That Lower Your Carbon Footprint And The Kids’

There are a number of changes you can make to your daily lives to lower your family’s carbon footprint, from using tap water wisely to limiting your usage of single-use plastic and shifting to more conscious clothing and toys. Here are a few to get you on the go:

Sassy Mama number peach 1Reduce Energy Waste

This goes without saying, but sometimes we’re just as guilty of having Netflix or Disney+ run as background noise! But whenever you notice an unattended TV or an empty room with the lights on, remind the children to switch it off. And encourage kids to use energy-saving appliances like a fan instead of an air-conditioner (especially when Hong Kong’s heat hasn’t reached its scorching stage yet).

Sassy Mama number peach 2Replace Single-Use Plastic With Reusable

When your kids go out to play, have them carry a reusable water bottle instead of using disposable ones. The same goes for birthday parties, go for eco-friendly alternatives than plastic decorations and utensils. Buy your groceries in bulk and pack snacks in a box rather than buying individually wrapped snacks, and, if you do go grocery shopping, remember to bring along your own bag! And all the while, let kids know how devastating plastic pollution is and how long plastic takes to decompose. This lets them know why we’re saying no to single-use plastic.

Sassy Mama number peach 3Take More Public Transport

A ferry ride, tram hopping, a quick MTR getaway…Hong Kong has an efficient transport system to get just about anywhere in the city! Plus, a lot of us are natural walkers who don’t mind going the distance on foot, and it’s good exercise for kids too (well, until they run off to catch a butterfly).

lower carbon footprint home supplies green living

Sassy Mama number peach 4DIY Home Supplies

Have the kids make their own lip balms, body creams, dishwashing detergent and more. Most ingredients are natural and safe to use amongst children (but do double-check and keep an eye on the kids), just prepare some gloves or give a hand in squeezing lemons or crushing coffee grounds. DIY home supplies are also safer for your skin and the planet!

Sassy Mama number peach 5Grow Your Own Veggies

This will sound like a luxury to most living in tiny apartments in Hong Kong, you don’t necessarily have to grow ALL your organic food, it can be something small like kale, cherry tomatoes or chilli or herbs like mint, basil, or rosemary. Simply head to a plant nursery and find a pot that fits. The idea is to have your own mini-farm – as tiny as it may be, it does heaps when it comes to reducing waste from plastic packaging. And it’s a great way to have kids learn about responsibility (okay, we’re just bad with watering plants and we’ll hope our kids are better!).

Sassy Mama number peach 6Switch Over To A Plant-Based Diet Whenever Possible

Unless of course, you’re a vegetarian or vegan already! Food production accounts for a third of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, and meat accounts for nearly 60% of all greenhouse gases from food production. On top of that, over-fishing causes destruction to marine life. This is an important fact to keep in mind and what we can aim to do is try having one meal a day that’s plant-based (either dinner or lunch) to cut down the demand for meat. This also gives us room to experiment with vegetarian recipes (there are loads of ideas, we promise!).

lower carbon footprint toys green living

Sassy Mama number peach 7Be Mindful About The Clothes And Toys You Buy

Did you know that one pair of jeans take 7,500 litres of water to make? Let’s not get started on the rest. Opting for sustainable clothes or second-hand wear is a much greener alternative. We also love circular fashion brands that give old clothes new life, extending their usage and durability. Same goes for toys – we can often find secondhand options. And remember to consume what you need, not what you want. Kids easily outgrow their clothes and may get bored of their toys, this is where a circular system can make a huge difference.

Sassy Mama number peach 8Go For Beach And Hike Clean-Ups

Get hands-on and sign up for beach clean-ups with the kids. You’ll be surprised to find just how much rubbish ends up in the local environment. From bits from nets to styrofoam and lots of plastic bottles, the waste products break down into smaller bits and get consumed by birds and sea animals which is life-threatening for them. Grab the hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, get cleaning and then go for a dip!

Sassy Mama Tip: You can introduce a new eco-friendly activity every now and then – habits take time to form and we don’t want to force our kids or overwhelm them. You can also try a “Low Carbon Day” on certain days of the week and make it a little family challenge to see who’s the winner!

Give Yourself And Your Child A Pat On The Back!

Even though we may be seeing the term “sustainable” now more than ever, it’s no easy feat switching to an eco-friendly lifestyle, especially if you’ve spent a long time in a city like Hong Kong where food takeaways, fast fashion and laser light shows are still prevalent. But we’re getting there, one plastic straw and reusable cup at a time! And it’s oh so rewarding to instil a positive attitude in our kids and to let them know about climate change and lowering their carbon footprint.

Are you having a clear-out and want to find where to donate your much-loved possessions in Hong Kong? From charities to non-profit organisations, consignment shops and more, here’s where to donate or sell your things in the 852. It’s time to cull the clutter and feel great doing it!

It’s no secret that our tiny apartments in Hong Kong can accumulate a whole lot over the years. Especially if you have babies, toddlers and kids that are growing up at the speed of light, with clothes or shoes that have been worn once or twice, and in some cases, not at all! Take the opportunity to do some serious clearing out and sort through everything from toys to books, and even furniture and electronics. You can either sell or, better yet, donate these pieces to some pretty stellar charities, non-profit organisations and consignment shops (listed in alphabetical order) that will greatly benefit those less fortunate. Donating in Hong Kong has never been so simple!

Editor’s note: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some organisations have altered how and what items they receive as donations. Please make sure to contact them directly if you are unsure.
