What To Do And See In Phuket

Beaches To Visit In Phuket

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to do in Phuket what to see in Phuket beach bang tao surin

Phuket is absolutely teeming with amazing beaches and, really, the only problem is choosing the best ones!

  • Patong Beach is a favourite with the locals and tourists alike, and as such is very busy and the prices for water sports and beach activities skyrocket during high season, so be prepared!
  • On the other hand, Surin Beach is a much quieter area with a white beach and a gorgeous bay (and abundant parking, hallelujah!).
  • At Bangtao Beach you’ll usually find more expats who’ve elected to make Phuket their second home, so the beach bars will be packed with regulars who are generally friendly and staff who are used to tourists.
  • For something a little quieter and with great snorkelling, check out Kata Beach near the south end of Phuket.
  • Then you have Banana Beach. This practically deserted hidden beach is nothing short of picturesque with lush jungle foliage and intimidating rocks surrounding the secret strip of white sand. It is a bit of an effort to get to, but perfect if you have adventurous kiddos who want to connect with their inner explorer.

Adventure Activities For Kids In Phuket

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to do in Phuket what to see in Phuket atv riding adventure adrenaline atv bike quad bike

There’s a lot more in Phuket for little daredevils! Phuket is home to all kinds of high-adrenaline activities for the whole family, from white water rafting to ATV riding and even go-karting (we’re fans of anything that’ll burn off the kids’ excess energy!). There are a number of companies that offer packages with multiple activities that may well take up a whole day, so shop around until you find something that suits your family. For example, Klook has several experiences, such as one that includes an ATV tour to Big Buddha and ziplining, and through Get Your Guide you could visit the Monkey Cave, go Water Rafting and ziplining (for children above the age of 4).

Other adventure activities in Phuket:

  • Go-karting: If you have future F1 drivers on your hands, head to the Phuket Kart Speedway in Kathu where they have kids’ karts with a speed limit and double seaters so parents can take the little ones on a high-speed race.
  • Mini golf: Likewise, if you have a budding Tiger Woods at home, pop over to Phuket Adventure Mini Golf for some family fun amidst the perfectly manicured landscape, with a covered restaurant where you can stop for a quick drink and bite. You could even try the mini golf course at Dino Park if your kids want an extra challenge (with a bit of palaeontology mixed in) surrounded by dinosaurs!

Temples To Visit In Phuket

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to do in Phuket what to see in Phuket temple wat chalong

There is no shortage of cultural and sacred sites in Phuket, but some are more tourist-friendly than others. Wat Chalong is the largest temple on the island and frequently tops must-see lists (and with good reason). Open from 7am to 5pm, this Buddhist temple is the perfect place to learn more about the religion as well as take in some prime architecture. Just remember to dress appropriately, take your shoes off at the entrance and be respectful so as not to disturb those praying (this applies to all temples and places of worship).

While Hong Kong has its own Big Buddha, the 150-foot-tall marble statue in Phuket is certainly worth a visit too, especially to catch those gorgeous island sunsets.

In Old Phuket Town you’ll find the Jui Tui Shrine which is a Taoist temple – you might recognise the golden dragons and architecture from our own temples. While the canal it’s named for is no longer there, you should still drop by, particularly during October and November when the Phuket Vegetarian Festival is in full swing!

Museums To Visit In Phuket

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to do in Phuket what to see in Phuket museum upside down house

If you’ve had to drag your kids to the temples by their hair (no shame, we’ve all done it), treat them to this surprise: tell them you’re going to a museum next and take them to the 3D Museum (also known as The Trick Eye Museum). Have them pose in front of incredible art that’ll make them look like they’re jumping over lava or being eaten by sharks, and you’ll create memories for a lifetime. This is especially recommended if you have multiple kids, so they can position each other while you do your duty and capture the perfect angles!

For a unique experience we’re not sure you can get anywhere else, take the family to the Upside Down House – yes, it’s what it sounds like, the house is built upside down and the furniture is nailed to the ceiling, so in pictures it looks like you’re upside down. It’s the perfect way to let the kids’ creativity run wild! There’s even a maze for you to (try not to) get lost in if you’re looking for something even more interactive.

Theme Parks In Phuket: FantaSea, Andamanda & Splash Jungle

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to do in Phuket what to see in Phuket water park andamanda splash jungle

Known as Phuket’s ultimate cultural theme park, FantaSea is hard to miss as a vibrant family-friendly hotspot. Showcasing the best of Thai culture in a number of stage shows, animal encounters and buffets, this experience follows the legendary Prince of Kamala through Thailand’s rich history with no shortage of aerial acrobatics, authentic culinary delights, magic and elephants to spare.

Andamanda Phuket is a relatively new water park in Phuket, but it’s already making waves amongst locals and tourists alike. With a Thai-heritage theme, this is a great place – sprawling over 100,000 square metres – for kids to embrace Thai culture while having a splashing good time. There’s certainly something for everyone in the family, from the swim-up sand bar for the parents, to Phuket’s longest lazy river, to the Eagle Flyer ride for the older kids seeking an adrenaline high!

Splash Jungle is tried, tested and true. Built on a huge plot of land near the airport, with its own hotel for convenience, this water park ensures fun for all. It has a wave pool, multiple slides of increasing height and intensity, a dedicated kids’ zone including a Play Pool for the tiniest tots, and a family raft ride. It really is the water oasis it promises to be.

Day Trips From Phuket To Neighbouring Islands

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to do in Phuket what to see in Phuket island hopping james bond island koh phi phi

This is for cinephiles! Do you remember ‘The Beach’ with a young Leonardo DiCaprio? Well, a significant portion of that movie was filmed in none other than Koh Phi Phi (specifically Maya Bay) which is just a short boat trip from Phuket. Granted, it won’t be the secluded paradise you saw Leo and his co-stars lounge around in, but it is a scenic beauty nonetheless. Phi Phi remains a favourite amongst tourists for snorkelling and scuba diving, so if your teenagers are interested in marine life and love a splash, this is where to take them!

Then there’s Khao Phing Khan which is a group of islands home to James Bond Island, named after – you guessed it – ‘The Man With The Golden Gun’ which featured this location in 1974. This is another great option for a day out with the family as you can do an adventure tour that includes canoeing through a sea cave and lunch, or simply go island-hopping with a stop at this famously picturesque spot.

What’s In Phuket For Animal Lovers?

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to do in Phuket what to see in Phuket elephant sanctuary ethical elephant reserve nature

Knowing what we do about the practice of drugging and harming animals to make them more tourist-pliable in various parts of Thailand, we tend to veer away from places like Tiger Kingdom or tours that include elephant riding. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t animal-friendly places in Phuket you can take your kids to, it just requires some research. For example, if you wish to observe elephants (and maybe feed them too), check out an ethical company that prides itself on the rescuing and safekeeping of these incredible animals, such as Phuket Elephant Sanctuary, Phuket Elephant Nature Reserve and Hidden Forest Nature Reserve.

You might not think of Phuket as a great place to go horse-riding, but guess what? You can! Niran Equestrian Center hasn’t been around long, but it’s already been lauded for its loving treatment of the horses, its serene location and its classes tailored for all levels. Plus, its restaurant just opened offering much-needed respite for the mamas waiting for their kiddos to finish galloping around.

If you’re missing your fur babies at home, pop in to the Soi Dog Foundation (on a weekday) where you can meet the rescued pups of Phuket. This organisation has become famous thanks to many Instagram reels and you’ll know just why when you go on the free guided tour and spend time in the puppy enclosure and cattery. Be prepared to have your heart stolen! And if those weren’t enough puppy cuddles for you, head on over to Hug Me Café, Phuket’s best dog cafe (in our opinion) that has over a dozen puppers ready to run out and smother you with love.

Where To Eat And Drink In Phuket

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to eat in Phuket what to drink in Phuket old phuket town tu kab khai tkk thai food
It’s impossible to provide a definitive guide to eating and drinking in Phuket, simply because there are So. Many. Options. However, we can suggest where you can start and offer up some personal highlights – such as the Banana Nutella pancakes (or roti) you can grab off one of the many street vendors around town!

If You’re In Old Phuket Town

This charming little area is a remnant from Phuket’s old tin-mining days and boasts gorgeous Sino-Portugese architecture that make it distinct from the rest of the island. Even just a quick stroll around this town provides a lovely cultural break, and it’s the perfect place for an authentic taste of Phuket.

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to eat in Phuket what to drink in Phuket old phuket town zimplex mixology laboratory shots cocktails drinks phuket

  • Tu Kab Khao has been highly rated on the Michelin Guide for a while now and is definitely worth a visit, just make sure you book in advance as it’s always crowded at dinner time!
  • For piping-hot and delicious noodles, try Hana Café+Ramen or one of the street vendors around the island selling customisable soup noodles for as little as 40 Baht (less than $10).
  • If you’ve left the kiddos at home, check out Zimplex Mixology Laboratory for the most interesting and Instagrammable shots you’ve ever seen (or drunk), then continue the night with local favourites The Library or The Column where you’ll often enjoy live music and cheap tipples.

If You’re Staying In Laguna, Phuket

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to eat in Phuket what to drink in Phuket banyan tree laguna boat lagoon

Laguna is easily one of the most well-kept and family-friendly areas in Phuket, known for its upscale restaurants and boutiques, manicured greenery, abundance of residential complexes and hotels, and of course, the scenic Laguna Golf Course. More than anything you’ll find expat families with children who attend school in Phuket and retirees who spend their days enjoying life in the sun and sand. As such, while there are local eateries around, you’ll find more cuisines here catered to international tastes (often with a Thai element though!) with suitable choices for both parents and children.

  • If, like us, you can gorge endlessly on sushi, try Yuzu Japanese Restaurant & Bar which offers All-You-Can-Eat sushi for 599 Baht (less than $130)
  • The ever-popular Phuket Coffee Lab serves freshly-brewed cappuccinos and hearty sandwiches, eggs and smoothie bowls
  • Kenny Rogers Roasters (yes, that Kenny Rogers) is a family-oriented sports bar-cum-casual dining restaurant with an extensive food menu and plenty of options for kids.

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to eat in Phuket what to drink in Phuket nanami japanese bbq yakiniku laguna boat lagoon
Other restaurants in the area we love are Nanami Yakiniku where you can grab sushi and have yourself a Japanese BBQ with quality meat and Bocconcino which is a stylish Italian restaurant nestled on top of the lagoon that offers unparalleled views to accompany your meal. There’s also Tawai which is popular for its yummy Thai food (such as the steamed fish that can be ordered as a fillet so you don’t have to deal with the pesky bones) and the fact that it has its own Cooking School so you can take the taste of Thailand back home.

If You’re Near Layan Or Bang Tao Phuket

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to eat in Phuket what to drink in Phuket bang tao surin hugo hub phuket beach bar beach restaurant

For a local meal that does not pander to mild tourist palates, you can’t go wrong with C’est Bien (yes, the name is misleading) in Layan. Best enjoyed in groups so you can try multiple dishes, this family-run restaurant has developed a loyal following in recent years for its consistently delicious food. You can ask for dishes to be made more or less spicy – such as the massaman curry – but you may need to employ Google Translate. If you’re lucky, they’ll have just made a seafood run and you can order the crab meat curry with vermicelli noodles that comes with a whole crab instead of the usual scant pieces of crab meat.

The Bang Tao area has been rapidly developing since before COVID and is now home to dozens of restaurants and beach bars. As such, you’re spoilt for choice as a visitor, but maybe a little too spoilt? Listen, when you’re on a beach bed watching the waves with a fresh coconut in your hand, you’re probably having a good time regardless of where you are. But in case you’re looking for a recommendation anyway, our favourites are Beach Pig – where you can watch live music, enjoy an expertly-made cocktail and pop down to rent jet skis and other water sports equipment – and Hugo Hub Phuket – which has multiple food trucks, bean bag chairs and fresh seafood.

The Rest Of Phuket

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to eat in Phuket what to drink in Phuket three monkeys flying hanuman

  • Savoey Seafood in Patong is a notable mention where your kids are likely to be awed by all the creatures in fish tanks
  • Pha Chom Tawan in Kamala is a family-run restaurant that offers delicious local dishes and spectacular views (try to go on a clear day before 6pm to catch the amazing sunset)
  • We’d be remiss not to mention Three Monkeys Phuket – surrounded by luscious greenery, it has unique interiors that make for excellent pictures, and delectable Southern Thai cuisine – which is situated very close to Hanuman World where you can go ziplining, abseiling, and take in the scenery on a gorgeous Sky Walk
  • There’s a little row of picturesque shophouses next to the Index Living Mall which includes restaurants of varying cuisines, such as Crust for fresh Italian food with daily specials (try the Scallop Risotto) and Bollywood Phuket for authentic Indian eats (like Chicken Tandoori and Biryani) and unique fusion dishes (think Masala Prawn Tacos!).

Where To Stay In Phuket

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to eat in Phuket what to drink in Phuket hot springs resort and beach spa

Any touristy place has plenty of options to stay, but we know not all of them are family-friendly. Which is why we have done our research and found the best Phuket resorts and hotels for families. From well-known international chains like the Rosewood and JW Marriott to the more local treasures like Splash Beach Resort and the Sunwing hotels, we’ve rounded up the best so you find the perfect pick for your family.

However, there is one just outside of Phuket we’d like to mention here. The Hot Spring Beach Resort And Spa is only a 20-minute drive from the Phuket International Airport (or an hour if you’re coming from further south like Bang Tao) and definitely worth the trip. There are standard hotel rooms as well as villa-type rooms that look out to the huge winding swimming pool. There are multiple natural hot springs (40°C) and an icy pool (16°C), and it’s recommended that you go back and forth between the two, just be warned, you might get a little dizzy after a while! It’s the perfect getaway for a family who is looking for a unique experience, and did we mention it’s only a short drive to the new (and beautiful) Aquella Golf Course?

Things To Note

hong kong guide to Phuket Thailand what to eat in Phuket what to drink in Phuket splash jungle water park

  • High season tends to run from November to March, during this time there are fewer storms, but prices are significantly higher for just about everything
  • If you’re going to take your kids to Patong, it’s better to go during the day time, the stories about Soi Bangla getting lewd and lascivious after the sun goes down are not exaggerated
  • Eatigo is a booking app worth getting as it offers great discounts at hundreds of restaurants in Phuket (though the best ones usually run during off-peak season)
  • Grab & Bolt will probably be your best friends for transport – Phuket doesn’t have anything close to the public transport system in Hong Kong, so your best chances will be to rent a car or rely on these apps (if you don’t want to be ripped off by the taxis and tuk-tuks)
  • If you’re riding on or driving a motorbike, WEAR A HELMET. Aside from the obvious safety factor, local police often pull tourists over to slap them with an extortionate fine for ignoring traffic rules
  • There a several places (particularly local/beachside spots) that may charge extra if you try to pay with a credit card, so make sure to always have cash on you, contactless debit cards should also work.

Have a blast in Phuket, mamas!

Where To Stay In Macau

There’s no shortage of hotels in Macau! Your biggest challenge will be deciding exactly which area of Macau to stay in, and that will largely be determined by the activities you are looking to do with your family. There are four areas to choose from, the Macau Peninsula, attached to mainland China, the islands Taipa and Coloane, as well as the land reclamation between the two islands, known as Cotai.

You’ll find most attractions, sites and casinos in Macau, Taipa and Cotai. Coloane, however, offers more of a cultural experience. You’ll find colonial buildings running along the sides of the cobblestone streets giving visitors a glimpse into the city’s Portuguese past.

Check out Sassy Mama’s guide to hotels in Macau for our recommendations of the top places to stay with kids in each of these areas.

How To Get To Macau

Hong Kong Macau Ferry

The Macau ferry is back up and running! With regular sailings, the ferry has long been one of the most popular ways to travel to Macau. Ferries depart from the Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal in Sheung Wan, the Kowloon China Ferry Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui and Hong Kong International Airport’s SkyPier. There are two ferry operators to choose from:

Take The Bus From Hong Kong To Macau

Mamas across Hong Kong were super excited about the opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge back in 2018 giving us a whole new transport option for Macau. This one is especially great for Discovery Bay, Tung Chung and New Territory families.

Make your way by public transport, taxi or private car to the Hong Kong Port. Here you’ll clear immigration before taking a shuttle bus across the bridge. Buses to Macau run 24 hours a day and tickets cost between $35 to $70 (which is a fraction of the price of the ferry tickets!).

Sassy Mama Tip: You can book a parking spot at the Hong Kong Port here.

There are also a number of cross-border coaches that operate bus services directly to Macau casinos.

  • One Bus – Starting from Jordan, the route passes through Sands Macao, Venetian Macao and Parisian Macao. www.onebus.hk
  • Hong Kong Shared Bus Transfers – Direct buses from Hong Kong with drop-off points at Venetian Macao, Galaxy Macau, MGM Cotai, Grand Lisboa Macau and more. www.klook.com

Are you planning a trip to Zhuhai? Chimelong Ocean Kingdom alone is reason enough to visit, but there are plenty of other hidden gems in the city – from a camping park to hot springs and architectural landmarks. Here’s why you must put Zhuhai on your travel bucket list.

Did you know you can get from Hong Kong to Zhuhai in less than an hour? Zhuhai is located in the Pearl River Delta Estuary, borders Macau by land and overlooks Hong Kong. Being part of the Special Economic Zone, it’s seen rapid growth over the years, but that hasn’t taken away from its natural beauty. It has stunning coastlines, peaceful islands and vast stretches of greenery. If you have never visited the city and have been wondering whether it’s family-friendly enough, we’re here to tell you about the wonders that await you and the kids in Zhuhai. We spoke to our very own Sassy Mama, Elly Liu, who visits Zhuhai regularly with her son. You know that every suggestion comes tried, tested and approved by Sassy Mama and Sassy Juniors! We also tell you how and where to book your preferred Zhuhai experiences, since most websites are in Chinese and not always easy to navigate.

Things To Do In Zhuhai With Kids

There is just so much to do in Zhuhai with kids that one weekend is simply not enough (no wonder Elly goes there so regularly!). We have tried to narrow it down to our top seven picks that the entire family will enjoy.

Chimelong Ocean Kingdom Zhuhai

Chimelong Ocean Kingdom

This is one of the most-visited theme parks in the world and with good reason! You can see almost all the sea animals you can think of, and they also have different animal-themed rides and roller coasters, theatre shows with acrobats and performers, a float parade and an incredible fireworks finale over the Hengqin Ocean Lake.

You must visit the Whale Shark Aquarium, holder of five Guinness World records! Honestly, just visiting Chimelong Ocean Kingdom could take up all of your stay in Zhuhai!

Sassy Mama Tip: Don’t get confused with Chimelong in Guangzhou, which is part of the same group. The website for both is the same and isn’t very user-intuitive, so it’s best to follow the booking link we’ve provided below.

Book via Klook

Chimelong Ocean Kingdom Zhuhai, Huandao Road, Lutai, Xiangzhou District, Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, China, www.chimelong.com

zhuhai beach

Xianglu Bay Beach Zhuhai

If a holiday doesn’t feel like one without a beach visit, make sure you head to the Xianglu Bay Beach. There are many beaches in Zhuhai, but this is one of the most well-known and popular ones. It almost feels like being home at Repulse Bay! It’s connected to a shopping mall, so you can browse gifts and knick-knacks for friends back home while your kids play in the sand and soak up the sun, even if they don’t swim! A good time to visit is during the spring-time Kite Festival when it feels serene and beautiful, and the weather is just perfect!

Sassy Mama Tip: Look out for the Statue of The Fisher Girl. This is a Zhuhai landmark and you’ll have a sweet folk tale to tell your kids. Legend has it that the Fisher Girl was a sea fairy and the daughter of the southern Sea Dragon King, who fell in love with a local fisherman. Though their love story was thwarted, the heartbroken fisherman finally found a way to bring the dead fairy back to life.

imperial hot springs zhuhai

Imperial Hot Springs Resort

As the name suggests, this is a hot spring resort. Though manmade, it is tastefully done and recreates the Japanese-style hot springs (arguable, as some websites claim it follows the Tang dynasty architecture!). The hot spring inn integrates various themed restaurants, stalls, teahouses and other elements of a village.

The “Village Street Food” is one of the most interesting aspects of the resort. It’s like the buffets in other hotels, but instead of sitting down and eating in a banqueting room, you walk through a “village” and pick out what you want to eat (so much more fun for the children!). Other than the different types of food, you can also enjoy bands, live shows and play booth games.

Book via Klook.

Wholesale market zhuhai

Baitengtou Fishery Wholesale Market

Love the feel of Hong Kong’s wet markets? Then you will definitely like the Baitengtou Fishery Wholesale Market. You can buy seafood here (fresh catch and at much lower prices) and take it to restaurants asking them to cook it for you.

Oli Aerospace Land Zhuhai

Zhuhai Aerospace Land

This centre opened in January last year and is becoming a popular destination for school visits from Hong Kong. It covers an area of around 42,000 square meters, with eight exhibition areas and 20 immersive interactive experience spaces. Kids will love the flight simulators, the games and VR experiences.

Sassy Mama Tip: Official tickets are available via WeChat, but if you’re wondering how to book them, look at the packages being offered by some hotels. Look at the “where to stay” section below for more details. You could also book via Trip.com

Zhuhai Farms

Farm Visits In Zhuhai

All kids love going to farms and Zhuhai offers plenty of them. You can take your kids strawberry picking, lemon picking and get them to pet and feed many domesticated farm animals. This is the one that Elly recommends (田園部落 – if you’d like to show the taxi driver), but you can also check at the hotel reception for an option that is closer to where you are staying.

Other Places To Visit & Things To Do In Zhuhai With Kids

Outdoor playgrounds – There are plenty of places for kids to run around and play. We really like Xingqita Unpowered World (mentioned above), which is worth a visit even if you’re not staying at Sumlodol Camping Park.

Zhuhai Opera House – You don’t need to get to Sydney to get an iconic ’gramworthy pic. In the shape of two scallops, this is a pretty impressive architectural structure.

Lover’s Road – Strolling down this seaside promenade is lovely, especially in the evenings. While you’re walking down Lover’s Road towards the beach, you will spot the Statue of The Fisher Girl – another one to snap up for the ’gram!

How To Get To Zhuhai From Hong Kong

The creation of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge has made it really easy to get to Zhuhai. You can take the bus there – it takes around 40 minutes via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge shuttle bus.

You can also take the ferry, and the high-speed ferry from Hong Kong or Kowloon should take just over an hour.

There’s a reason Hoi An and nearby Da Nang are destinations that Hong Kongers keep flocking back to. Just a two-hour direct flight and you’ve got pristine beaches, cultural immersion and hotels and resorts to suit all tastes and budgets. Here are our picks for families visiting Da Nang and Hoi An, Vietnam.

What’s not to love? Closer than Bali, Phuket or even the Philippines, Da Nang is just a quick direct flight from Hong Kong. The city, which is a tourist destination in its own right, has beach resorts lining the turquoise coast all the way along to the old town of Hoi An just 40 minutes down the road. This Sassy Mama has been visiting Hoi An regularly since 2011 and let’s just say that whole a lot has changed over the years, it’s a destination that I just keep coming back to!

What To See And Do In Hoi An

hoi an old town da nang vietnam

Hoi An Old Town

Hoi An is one of those places where you can happily while away the hours just wandering around. A fluke of history has meant that this once bustling trade city was abandoned in favour of Da Nang, just in time to protect it from modernisation. It was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage list and has been a firm favourite with tourists ever since.

Walking through the streets (much of the old town is closed to traffic) you will see a mix of Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese and European architecture. At night, colourful lanterns light up the streets and as the temperature drops, it’s the perfect time to take in the markets and restaurants. It can be very busy, but the old town is flat, stroller-friendly and fun for kids.

Food Tours And Cooking Classes

Surely we aren’t the only ones who go to Hoi An purely to eat our way around town? While there are countless restaurants, sometimes you want to eat as the locals do, but don’t know where to start. A food tour is a great way to try the popular favourites (banh mi anyone!) as well as local, regional delicacies (a steaming bowl of cao lau noodles) and some dishes for the more adventurous eaters (try the balut – not quite an egg, not quite a duck).

Hoi An Food Tour offers a range of private and small group food tours where you can walk, cycle or be whisked around town on the back of a motorbike as you sample the best street food in the area. The friendly, young guides will keep you entertained throughout the tour, whether zipping through the back streets or meandering past the rice paddies.

Most of the good restaurants in town offer cooking classes so you can try your hand at local favourites. We can’t go past fresh rice paper rolls or Hoi An crispy pancakes. What a treat to learn how to make them! Vy’s Market Restaurant (see our restaurant recommendations below) is a great place to start for lessons but you can also check out Green Bamboo or Tra Que Water Wheel.

Lune Center — Theatre Shows

Older kids and teens will love a night out at the Lune Center. It’s hard to miss the 13-metre high bamboo dome scenically perched by the riverfront. We caught a spellbinding production of Teh Dar, an hour-long production of acrobatics, tribal music and contemporary dance with the creative use of bamboo for circus stunts.

hoi an vietnam da nang travel kids yaly tailor made clothing

Tailor-Made Clothing In Vietnam

All around Hoi An you will find custom clothing and footwear, even bag and jewellery shops. We challenge you to leave town without at least one made-to-measure piece! The tailors range in quality and price, largely dependent on the type of materials selected and the craftsmanship involved.

Yaly Couture is tried and tested. This Sassy Mama has had everything from a wedding dress to winter coats made here over the years. It isn’t the cheapest in town, but it has a range of quality fabrics and skilled seamstresses across its three branches.

BeBe is another firm favourite amongst the team for quality tailoring. With 15 years of experience, three branches across Hoi An and a promise of unlimited fittings, you’re sure to be pleased with the results.

Sassy Mama Tip: Know what you like, what you want and what suits you before you visit a tailor. The possibilities are endless and if you are short on time it is easy to get overwhelmed. If you choose something that doesn’t suit your body type, no amount of tailoring is going to make it work.

Ba Na Hills And Golden Bridge

Chances are you’ve seen images of the Golden Bridge — two strong, almost ethereal hands holding up a walkway on the side of a mountain. Perhaps you thought it was part of a temple complex? Think again. The now iconic bridge is located within the Ba Na Hills Sun World theme park.

hoi an vietnam da nang travel kids ba na hills sun world

Your day starts with a cable car ride high up into the mountains (where it is thankfully noticeably cooler). Once at the summit, you’d be forgiven if you were thinking you’d landed in another country, Europe perhaps? The park consists of different zones with rides, street shows and restaurants.

hoi an vietnam da nang travel kids golden bridge ba na hills sun world

While I’m glad we went, the park was packed with tour groups and our kids (five and two) were a bit young to really enjoy the experience. It looks like there is a lot of construction going on, so expect to see more attractions opening in the years to come. The expectation and reality on this one definitely didn’t match!

Sassy Mama Tip: The official website for Ba Na Hills is terrible to navigate and constantly crashes so it’s worth booking through your accommodation or an agent.

My Son Temples

If you have time for a side trip, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed My Son Temples is an easy one-hour drive from Hoi An. Set out early (before the heat sets in) and you’ll be treated to exploring this historic Champa temple complex (a similar design to Angkor Wat) without the crowds.

hoi an da nang vietnam the nam hai four seasons bike tour

Bike Tours

The area around Hoi An Old Town and the surrounding countryside is mostly flat, and once away from the main roads, surprisingly quiet. Perfect for a family cycling trip! Your hotel will most likely have bicycles available to rent (by the hour or by the day), but if you worry about your navigational abilities, following a local guide will be your best option. Many companies combine a cycling tour with other activities, like cooking classes and boat tours, so you can customise your perfect day trip.

French expat, Pascal, and his wife run Heaven & Earth Bicycle Tours. The company offers small group and private cycling tours for all capabilities and families will love that they have kids’ bikes and baby seats (that comply with EU and international safety standards).

Island Tours, Scuba Diving and Snorkelling

Just off the coast of Hoi An in the South China Sea are the Cham Islands, home to the Cu Lao Cham Marine Park. While we wouldn’t call scuba diving here world-class, the islands do offer up some of the best coral reefs along the coastline of Vietnam. There are a number of operators offering speed boats to the islands as well as full-day snorkelling and scuba diving trips.

Beach Time

Cua Dai and An Bang Beach are just a few kilometres from Hoi An Old Town and should definitely be on your list if visiting in the dry season. Who would say no to lazing about under a palm tree with a coconut in hand? Small bars and restaurants line the sand so go for a stroll, find a perfectly located sun lounger and park yourself for the day.

hoi an old town da nang vietnam markets

Shopping In Hoi An

There are countless shops and markets around the Old Town of Hoi An. Don’t forget to bargain, hard! Whether you are after custom clothes, leather goods, jewellery, artwork or general souvenirs, you won’t have to search far. There are however a few standout shops well worth the visit for nicer souvenirs to take home.

Homewares shop Sunday is a favourite with more than one of the Sassy Mama team. Pick up some nice personal accessories, or maybe a statement piece for your apartment. You’ll be feeling those holiday vibes long after you return home! The store invites you in with handmade crafts and homewares that have been sourced from villages throughout Vietnam and Southeast Asia.

Lovers of quality fabrics and French design should head straight to Metiseko for clothing and accessories. The creative team has drawn its inspiration from Vietnamese traditions and landscapes (think jungle and bamboo-inspired prints) to create silks and organic cotton that is sustainably sourced from local artisans.

Sassy Mama Tip: Metiseko also has an online store and ships overseas!

Hoi An Restaurant Recommendations

You should never, ever go hungry in Hoi An! This city serves up some of the best cuisines in the country. While you can of course opt for the Vietnamese classics like banh mi, pho or rice paper rolls, my advice is to seek out the more local Hoi An favourites. Look for dishes like cao lau noodles, white rose dumplings (banh bao vac), Vietnamese turmeric noodles (mi quang) and crispy pancakes (banh xeo).

Ms Vy’s Restaurants

For a sure bet for quality local cuisine head straight to any of Ms Vy’s restaurants (and there are a lot of them!). Ms Vy is somewhat of a legend in Hoi An with over 30 years of experience in the restaurant business. She grew up in Hoi An, but her parents are from the north and the south respectively so she has been able to bring this influence into her cooking. Morning Glory and Vy’s Market Restaurant both serve up delicious Vietnamese recipes passed down through the generations.

Sassy Mama Tip: To try out Ms Vy’s recipes at home, pick up a copy of the Taste Vietnam: The Morning Glory Cookbook.

Mango Mango

Occupying a prime position overlooking the Thu Bon River, grab a table on the upstairs terrace at Mango Mango. From here you’ll have a great view not only of the river (especially beautiful if visiting during the full moon) but also of the Japanese Covered Bridge and the Hoi An Night Market. There’s live music every night, a great cocktail list and a menu perfect for sharing. This is our pick for unwinding after a day of sightseeing!

We’re a sucker for a social enterprise, so Noodle House by STREETS is always going to make our list of recommendations. Central Market Food Hall

For a truly local foodie experience, take a stroll through the Central Market Food Hall (if you take a food tour this will almost certainly be included). Not for the faint-hearted this is where the locals source their fresh produce and also pick up cheap and cheerful lunches and snacks. It’s overwhelming for your senses in the best possible way. As with all street food, look for a stall packed with locals and a high turnover so that you are eating the freshest fare!

Hotels And Resorts In Hoi An And Da Nang

There are so many options when it comes to sleeping in Hoi An. Most accommodation is either found on the outskirts of the Old Town or by the beach a few kilometres away. Many families choose to stay further afield in Da Nang (30 to 45 minutes drive away) and come to Hoi An for a day trip. Sassy team members have tried and tested the following options and they are listed according to price.

Hyatt Regency Da Nang Resort And Spa

A popular option for Hong Kong families (we met two other families during our stay and know many more who return regularly), the Hyatt Regency ticks all the boxes. Choose from hotel rooms, one, two or three-bedroom apartments or go all out in a spacious, beachfront villa with a private pool. There is a kid’s club with daily activities (4+ can attend unaccompanied), an outdoor playground and five pools scattered throughout the property, including one with a waterslide and another with inflatables for kids to play on.

Sassy Mama Tip: Some of the apartments and villas at the Hyatt Regency Da Nang are privately owned and available to rent on Airbnb. You still get full access to the resort’s amazing facilities (including the kids club for a minimal cost) and can pick up some great deals!

Hoi An da nang vietnam flood wet season

Weather And When To Visit Danang And Hoi An

The central Vietnamese coast has two main seasons, the wet and the dry. The wet season lasts from September to January, but most of the rain falls in October and November. Expect cooler temperatures around this time (a max of around 25°C) and there is also the potential for flooding.

The summer heat really kicks in from June to August (expect temperatures well above 30°C). On the flip side, this is also the time when you get the most spectacular full moon. Each month at this time all the street lights are turned off in the Old Town and you are guided by the colourful lanterns and moonlight. A highlight if you time your visit right and can handle the heat! If you are an avid beachgoer, this is the time for you. The water is calm and the wind light so you can make the most of island hopping and scuba diving.

Most families will find the shoulder months (March to May) the most comfortable. The humidity is relatively low and temperatures are comfortable. Perfect for meandering the Old Town at leisure as well as lazing by the pool!

Getting To Get To Hoi An And Da Nang From Hong Kong

There are daily flights from Hong Kong to Da Nang. The flight time is around two hours (so not too long to keep the kids entertained!). From Da Nang it is just over a 30-minute drive to Hoi An. Your accommodation will usually be able to organise transfers for you.

Sassy Mama Tip: Ride-sharing app Grab is widely available. Similarly, Grab Eats is also popular for ordering in if the kids have had an early night.

Visas For Vietnam

Many nationalities require a visa to enter Vietnam. Make sure you check the most up-to-date information as can differ between arrival cities. Some will be eligible for entry visa-free, for example, citizens of the UK (but not BNO passport holders) and many Europeans can enter visa-free for up to 15 to 21 days. There are also visa-on-arrival options as well as e-visas.

Sassy Mama Tip: Check ALL details are correct on your e-visa application and when the documents are sent to you (the issuing agency made two typos with our family that slowed down our arrival process). This is the official government website for e-visas (it doesn’t look official, but I can verify it is the website referred to by the Australian Consulate in Hanoi, and I’ve personally used it many times over the years).
