Learning to ride a bicycle is a childhood rite of passage, but often city living doesn’t allow for much cycling. We’re lucky that Hong Kong has some great cycle routes and biking paths, along with convenient bike rental shops, in Hong Kong.

When the weather cooperates, the first thing we parents like to do is get the kids outside. Cycling is a great option for a day out with the family. It’s fun and is great exercise and bike riding in Hong Kong is a lovely way to take in the view and visit new places. We’ve got great bike shop options (and bike rentals for kids, too!), that are surprisingly affordable in many locations, making this an accessible hobby on any budget.

Cycling Trails Hong Kong Outdoor Fitness: New Territories Cycling Track

New Territories Cycle Track Network

Don’t baulk! This is a full 60km trail that runs all the way from Tuen Mun, through Yuen Long, Sheung Shui, Tai Po and Sha Tin and finishes in Ma On Shan. We don’t expect kids to complete it in one go (nor mums or dads, for that matter!), but when you break down the sections there are some fantastic spots to spin your wheels. There are multiple entry and exit points and bicycle hubs with toilets and kiosks ensuring all ages can enjoy riding.

Bike rental: Check out L.K Bike. It has locations all along the New Territories Cycle Track Network and allows you to pick up and drop off in different locations. It has a huge range of bicycles for rent, including family bikes, tandem bikes, kids bikes with training wheels and even balance bikes. The website is mostly in Chinese, but works in Google Translate.

Sassy Mama Tip: Check out the handy website that’s chalked out the map, listing out all attractions, facilities and distances to help you plan your route. Three of our favourites are Tuen Mu to Yeun Long, Tai Po to Ma On Shan and Tsuen Wan Waterfront (mentioned below).
